This question type can help the person being interviewed feel more relaxed. Because it seems like a question that is not related to the problem at hand, they may feel less guarded. It can also serve to provide needed background for the interview subject. Question Type 1 (Required) Directive Has your wife ever been detained on similar grounds? The victim advocate could determine if they have encountered this situation before by asking them this question. If they have previously used the system, I might then briefly describe what to expect before asking if they have any questions. If this were the victim's first experience, I could make sure that they knew exactly what would happen. Question Type 2 (Required) Reflective I take it from your story that your wife got home intoxicated after midnight and started kicking and punching you, is that right? This makes it clear to the interviewee that you are paying attention and that you are paying attention to what is being stated. This can be advantageous in a number of ways, such as demonstrating that you are paying attention and assisting you in understanding what the interviewee is trying to say. Using this technique, you can ask the interviewee to restate a remark to determine whether their version of events changes. This could aid me in identifying any information that was omitted and ensuring that they receive all the support they require to recover.
