Public enterprises are required to present earnings per share data on the income statement. Consider the effect of dilutive and antidilutive convertible securities. Discuss this information from the perspective of a shareholder, and discuss what shareholders would expect to discern from this information. Hello class, Dilutive securities are defined as “a mechanism through which the owner of the security can obtain additional common stock” (Team, 2022). The purpose of dilutive shares is to raise the number of shares that a company has which in turn lowers the overall price of the shares as well as earnings per share. Antidilutive securities are defined as “actions such as securities being retired, converted, or affected through certain corporate activities, and the transaction results in an increased EPS” (Team, 2022). It is important that shareholders are knowledgeable about the information that is being presented to them. Earnings per share is a piece of information that many investors look at before investing. If the earnings per share changes drastically from one month to another, the investor would want to figure out why. This could be due to dilutive or antidilutive securities. Understanding this information will help to determine if the company is stable or not. An example of a company that had a super low EPS and have slowly rebuilt this is American Airlines. With a super low EPS of 0.20 in December of 2022, they don’t seem like a very good company to invest in. The American Airlines stock has fluctuated quite a bit in price and at its high in the last 5 years was at $34.40. Today it is at $13.88. You could easily tell yourself that this is just a low and the company will rise back up, making you around $20 per share. This is a risk that you would have to take. The company could just be diluting their shares or their could be more to the story (debt, fraud, etc.) The stock market can be tricky to
understand, but gaining knowledge about dilutive and antidilutive securities is the first step in understanding. Lindsey Team, T. I. (2022).
