Unit 2 Assignment Part 1: Altitude (km) vs. Temperature (°C) in the Atmosphere Hint: The y-axis should range from 0-100km in 5km increments. The x-axis should be a temperature scale from -100 to 20°C in 10-degree increments.
Use your course readings to answer the following questions: Question 1: What is the basic composition of clean, dry air (containing no dust, smoke, water vapor or other particulates)? The basic composition of clean, dry air is nitrogen and oxygen. Question 2: Why is the ozone layer important for life on Earth? The ozone layer is important for life on Earth, so it blocks UV rays from penetrating and damaging our skin. Question 3: Explain the increase in temperature in the stratosphere and the decrease in temperature in the mesosphere. The ozone layer's ability to retain solar heat causes temperatures to rise in the stratosphere and drop in the mesosphere. Question 4: What is the relationship between altitude and air pressure? The air pressure decreases with increasing altitude since this is one of the factors causing the air pressure to decline. Unit 2 Assignment Part 2: Use the assigned video clips to answer the following questions: Question 1: What are the conditions necessary for a hurricane to form? The necessary conditions for a hurricane to form are warn water that is 80 degrees, winds and moist air. Question 2: What are the stages of the life cycle of a hurricane? The four stages of the life cycle of a hurricane are the tropical disturbance stage, tropical depression stage, tropical storm stage and full-fledged tropical cyclone. Question 3: What is the relationship between storm intensity and air pressure? A storm can intensify and achieve its maximum wind capacity as the air pressure drops. Question 4: Choose one of the storms from the Hurricane History video clip. With web research and from what you learned in the video, answer the following: 4a. Describe the path of the hurricane. The hurricane Maria 2017 in Puerto Rico started a tropical wave intensified into a tropical storm and ended up a category 4 hurricane when it reaches land. 4b. Describe the maximum windspeeds and minimum air pressure associated with the storm.
Hurricane Maria maximum windspeeds of 175 mph and lowest air pressure of 908 Mbar 4c. What Saffir Simpson category was the hurricane when it made landfall? Hurricane Maria became category 4 by the time it made it to land. 4d. What impacts were experienced on land as a result of your chosen hurricane? Hurricane Maria caused blackouts one the worst block out in the US history, 7,000 homes did not have power and death of 3,000. Unit 2 Assignment Part 3:
