1 (#1 - 2 pts) Hydrologists measure precipitation through a simple weather instrument called a rain gauge. The rain gauge consists of a funnel-like container which feeds into a measuring tube that would measure how many mm of rain a given region would receive. The most common device used in weather monitoring for precipitation is the tipping bucket rain gauge. The TBRs device works by having 2 buckets connected on either end of a fulcrum. When water fills 1 of the buckets, the fulcrum will lower the bucket with water and empties while the empty bucket raises to begin the process again. The amount of times each bucket fills is used to determine how much precipitation has fallen. (#2 - 2 pts)
2 The name for a hydrologist's year is “water year”. Unlike the typical calendar year that begins January to December, the water year begins on October 1st and goes until the end of the month in September. Hydrologists choose to use this time line because it is accepted that more precipitation occurs during the latter half of any given year, usually during the fall months. Therefore the beginning of the water year starts in Oct. As for why they choose to end the year at the end of September is due to the fact that water reservoirs and watersheds will eventually lower in volume, and hydrologists want to calculate how much water is being used when there is little to no precipitation. (#3 - 2 pts) The name of the station closest to me is the Vancouver Harbour CS. The climate ID number is: 1108446. The elevation is 2.5 meters above sea level and latitude is 49°17'43.270" N and longitude is 123°07'18.730" W. This weather station is approximately 2 km away from my residence. (#4 - 2 pts) This current entire water year is drier than the previous water year. For the typical dry season, we also received less precipitation due to a warming climate. Vancouver Harbour CS Current Water Year Precipitation (mm) Previous Water Year Precipitation (mm) Difference (mm) Entire Year 1,128.4 mm 1,352 mm -223.6 mm May - September 129.2 216.7 mm -87.8 mm (#5 - 2 pts) The difference is higher between the two stations due to a higher latitude meaning the Squamish area was more susceptible to more types of precipitation. Current Water Year Precipitation (mm) Average Total Annual Precipitation (mm) Difference (mm)
