The main idea of the reading selection is that Impacts visible across the North. According to the territory's Environment Minister, Johnny Mike, critical infrastructure in Nunavut is vulnerable to melting permafrost, and changes in sea ice cover have hampered traditional hunting routes. 2. Identify the writer’s purpose in this selection. (I) a. The writer is trying to show the reader that decreasing sea ice thickness and distribution is changing wildlife habitats, affecting hunters' ability to harvest wildlife. Permafrost degradation, changes in ice conditions, rainfall and snow quantity, drainage patterns, temperatures, and extreme weather events can all have an impact on existing infrastructure. 3.Explain how this reading selection reminds you of another selection you have read. ( C a. This selection reminds me of a previous article I read titled "protecting people from polar bears," both of which were published in the Canadian Press. Both articles discussed climate change, with the exception of one,
which discussed climate change causing bear hunting seasons to be reduced, and the other, which discussed how people distribution is changing wildlife habitats, affecting hunters' ability to hunt. Overall, I believe they have the same concept but different meanings because climate change affects polar bears because ice is what they rely on, and the first nation mostly hunts for food hunting when it cold, icey.
