Investigating Glacial Landforms with Google Earth Start the Google Earth application. Uncheck any layers like “Borders and Labels”, “Photos”, etc. in the “Layers” panel. Load the Glacial Landforms Exercise kmz file into Google Earth. A copy of the kmz file is also placed on Canvas. Once loaded you should see a file called "Glacial Landforms Exercise.kmz" under "Temporary Places" in the "Places" panel. Click on the arrow beside the file name to reveal the folders for Rainier (used for Part 1) and Ayer (not used in this assignment). Click the arrow beside these folders to reveal their placemarks and paths. Alpine Glacial Landforms: Mt. Rainier Mt. Rainier 1. What kind of mountain is Mt. Rainier? Mt. Rainier is a large stratovolcano (active) volcanic peak in the Cascade Range. 2. How was the mountain shaped? Mt. Rainey as formed by lava flows, ash clouds, upswelling of lava and ash, and ice. This formed ridges that are steep and jagged. Success Cleaver 3. Uncheck the “Rainier Topo” in the “Places Panel”. Go to “Success Cleaver” by double clicking on its placemark in the “Places Panel”. You may want to zoom in or out for a better view. a. Describe the shape of Success Cleaver. Success Cleaver is a long rock ridge in Mt. Rainier, 3.3 miles long and crested. b. What kind of glacial landform is “Success Cleaver”? It is a type of ridge which is glacial, formed by a unified flow of glacial ice from uphill into two glacier flanks. c. Explain how this type of landform is created. It was formed when two glaciers eroded in a parallel U shape valley, creating the ridge structure Kautz Creek Valley: Elevation Profile 4. Use the ruler (or path) tool to create an elevation profile between Placemark Rainier 2 and Placemark Rainier 3. Do a search on “Creating and Elevation profile in Google Earth” if you need help. a. Describe the cross-sectional shape of the valley. It is a u-shaped valley
b. Have the elevation profile showing in Google Earth then copy the image by using the “Edit” > “Copy Image”. Paste the image below. You may want to resize the image once it has been pasted. c. Is the current shape a result of stream or glacial erosion? How can you tell? Glacier because of the rocky remnants of the mountain looks like it warmed over time. d. Go to the Kautz Creek by clicking on its placemark in the “Places Panel”. i. What type of channel does Kautz Creek running through the valley at this location exhibit? A u-shaped channel ii. What evidence did you use to support your answer? The way the valley curves in and is flatter on the bottom Sunset Amphitheater 5. Go to Sunset Amphitheater by double clicking on the placemark in the “Places” panel. Uncheck the “Rainier Topo” is so you can see the terrain. a. Right click on the Sunset Amphitheater path in the “Places” panel and then select “Show Elevation Profile”. What is the slope shape in the vertical dimension? It is a cirque shape b. Describe its shape in the horizontal dimension. It is still a cirque shape c. What kind of glacial landform is Sunset Amphitheater?
