Answer all of the questions below. Use course concepts and terms in your answers.
1.
Where, on Earth, would you expect to experience the smallest variation in temperature
from year to year and month to month? Why did you choose this location? (2 marks)
o
The place on Earth that I would expect to experience the smallest variation in
temperature form year to year and month to month would be at/ near the equator. I
chose this location because the angle of the sun, hours of sunlight daily and
energy received near the equator are quite consistent, there is not much variance.
2.
Why is the highest temperature in the day usually recorded in the afternoon, not right at
noon? (1 mark)
o
The highest temperature in the day is usually recoded in the afternoon because the
sun is present overhead and the Earth has been heated by the sun for the
beginning of the day storing all the incoming energy and heat.
3.
Explain how the concepts of albedo and urban heat islands are related to local
temperatures? (2 marks)
o
Albedo affects local temperatures because different surfaces reflect different
amounts of the sun’s radiation. Albedo plays a particularly large role in the local
temperatures of costal places. In costal places the sea helps to moderate to the
temperature variance. Urban heat islands affect local temperatures because
showing the temperature difference between the city center and the country. The
local temperature is typically higher in the city center due to surfaces like asphalt
absorbing the sun’s radiation and slowly releasing it, whereas in the country less
heat is absorbed and more is reflected.
4.
If a parcel of air has a 75% relative humidity, what will happen to the relative humidity if
the parcel of air is cooled? Explain why. (2 marks)
o
If the air has a 75% relative humidity and the air parcel is cooled than the relative
humidity will increase. This is because a decrease is temperature results in an
increase in relative humidity; as the air cools the amount of water vapor the air
can hold drops with increases the relative humidity.
5.
Look at the weather information below. What is causing there to be a difference between
the actual temperature and the “feels like” temperature? (1 mark)
o
Looking at the information below it is likely like the amount of cloud cover/ sun
present is what is causing the different between the actual temperature and the
“feels like temperature”. When more clouds are present the sun does not have the
opportunity to heat the Earth in the same fashion.
6.
Would you expect a glass of water to evaporate more quickly on a
warm or cold day?
o
I would expect water to evaporate more quickly on a warm day, because
due to an increase in temperature the molecules would move quicker and
evaporate faster
dry or humid day?
o
I would expect water to evaporate more quickly on a dry day because the
less water vapor currently being “help” in the air the more opportunity for
evaporation
windy or calm day?
o
I would expect the water to evaporate more quickly on a windy day as the
windy conditions would enhance evaporation
Explain your choices for a, b, and c. (3 marks)
7.
How does the water cycle transport energy? Give two examples. (2 marks)
o
One of the ways that the water cycle transports energy is through evaporation
where latent each is absorbed. In this case water changes from a liquid state to a
gaseous state, steam is an example of this. Another way that the water cycle
transports energy is through freezing where latent heat is released. In this case
water changes from a liquid state to a solid state, ice is an example of this.
