Next, using the information you found about this earthquake, write a news article
about the quake for the general population. Be sure to tell the readers all the
important information, including magnitude, intensity, and whether any populations
in the region experienced damage, injuries, death, and so on. Additionally, make
sure to tell the readers about future risks for more earthquakes based on any
nearby plate boundaries and the seismic history of this area.
Consider the following questions in your article:
How much damage was caused by the earthquake? What
type of damage was caused?
Did the earthquake have any effect on people's daily lives?
Was there a financial impact from the earthquake? Did the
earthquake have any effect on business or industry?
Think about the day of the week and time the earthquake
occurred. What are you usually doing at that time? How
would it impact your life if this earthquake had occurred
where you live?
Recently on the 5
th
of May 2023, an earthquake occurred 300
kilometers (about 186.41 mi) northwest of Tokyo, near the
coastline of the Noto, which is the Peninsula in Ishikawa
Prefecture making the absolute location 37.540°N and 137.305°E.
During this catastrophic event, the earthquake had a magnitude
of 6.2 which caused a damage depth of 8.7 kilometers
which
measured a strong 6 on the
shindo
(intensity) scale. Due to
the earthquake, the fire department in Suzu reported that
three houses had collapsed and that two people trapped in
two of the structures had been rescued but one man who fell
off a ladder was confirmed to have been killed. This
earthquake did cause an effect on the daily lives of people
because according to Traylor & Ninivaggi, 2023 “a man in his
30s said earlier in the day that his two-story house in Suzu
was partially destroyed, although no one inside was injured.
He said he was sorting through valuables as he can no longer
live in the house. After swaying heavily sideways from the
earthquake, there was a strong jolt in the end.” Also, a 63-
year-old priest of a Shinto shrine said in a phone interview. He
also said two stone lanterns in front of his house collapsed.
When natural disasters occur like this it is not only a
misfortune, but it also causes a loss of effect on individuals
financially since investments would have to be figured out.
According to the information I obtained that Chief Cabinet
Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said that they will continue to
assess the extent of the damages and, in close cooperation
with local authorities, will do their best to implement
emergency-disaster measures but as of now No indications of
damage to the supply services for gas, water, or electricity.
Some train routes, including the Hokuriku Shinkansen
between Nagano and Kanazawa stops, were suspended
because of the earthquake, according to West Japan Railway.
Later, the Shinkansen was back in operation. At the
Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant near Niigata
Prefecture, the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings
reported no damage, while Hokuriku Electric Power reported
no issues at the Shika nuclear power facility in Ishikawa
Prefecture. This earthquake occurred on the 5
th
of May at
05:42 pm during this time of the day, I am in class training to
obtain my caregiving license and if this earthquake would
have occurred during this time in the state of Washington, I
would be very frightening because I live near the mountain
the quake can cause an avalanche of rocks that could destroy
homes, businesses, and even freeways.
