ENV305 Global Climate Change
Southern New Hampshire University
Global climate change is a subject that is important to every single person living on
Earth, and there isn’t a specific audience that needs to hear the information more than another.
The audience that is being chosen for this presentation is a 3
rd
grade primary school class. The
reason behind this choice is that many of my friends and family are primary school educators and
my youngest son is also in primary school. Education is of great importance especially for young
minds and the subject of global climate change is one that is easy enough to understand for them
and can help their mindset when it comes to how to affect change no matter how small it may
seem. The relationship between this primary school class and climate change is extremely
important, the future is theirs to shape and live in and to set them up for success is of utmost
importance.
This audience needs to know the concrete facts of climate change, not speculation.
Trends of atmospheric temperature over the last few decades. Measurements of glacier loss as
well as measurements on how far the sea level has risen. There will also be emphasis on some of
the root causes of climate change, increase in greenhouse gas emissions both human-driven
factors and natural causes. The presentation will be structured as a power point presentation and
have visual aids. Being a younger audience, listing tables with standard deviation bars and
numbers after numbers on the data presented would not an effective way to have meaningful
engagement. Charts and graphs showing the change in temperature, glacier loss, sea level and
greenhouse gas emissions will be the most effective in this presentation. These topics are not the
end all be all of climate change but will give the audience a firm grasp on what is occurring in
the world around them. The tone of the presentation will be serious in nature but not in a way
that would impend doom on their futures.
Getting the attention of the audience will be done with the use of visual aids and the data
presented. A clear pattern will be seen when the data is presented and the drastic difference in the
values of change in temperature, glacier loss, sea level and greenhouse gas emissions will serve
as a major attention point. The objective of this presentation is to inform the audience of the
problem that we know as climate change, the objective is also to let them know that there is a
path towards a more sustainable future in mitigating climate change. Key terms to define to help
understanding. Weather: short term atmospheric events i.e. rain, thunderstorms, snowfall.
Climate: long term atmospheric events that are measurable. Greenhouse gas emissions: most
common is carbon dioxide but it can be any gas that has the effect of trapping heat in the
atmosphere.
This presentation will be through enough to educate this young audience without being
over the top with so much scientific data and figures that would leave them confused. It is
important to educate the younger population so that they know what is happening on our planet
with regards to climate change as well as what is causing the change.
