Problem 9: (worth 5 points total – points are listed below)
Classify the climate for a location of your choice in the state of Ohio
Log onto www.weatherbase.com. This site has the mean precipitation and temperature data
that you will need for classifying the climate for a station/city in Ohio that you choose for this
question. You will first see a page that you can browse by country (see example on the
following page). Select United States and then select Ohio. You will only need those
cities/locations to select from Ohio. When you select a location, you will see annual and
monthly averages for both data sets (see example on the following page). Make sure you
use °C and mm, NOT °F and inches. Once you select degrees Celsius, your average
precipitation table will automatically change to millimeters (mm).
Copy the monthly average temperature (°C) and average precipitation (mm) values for the
station you select onto a word document and turn in with this assignment. You can highlight
or right click the individual table to copy and paste (see next page). You will find a link just
below the lab 7 assignment to upload your word document. When you submit your answers
for this lib in the link titled, “Lab 7 – Climate Classification”, you will find a problem 9 question
that will ask you if you submitted or plan your word document for this assignment.
Average temperature and average precipitation data/tables (2 points)

Using the Köppen Climate Classification System procedures, answer the following:
Provide a reason as to why or why not the station is one of the (five) 5 climate types.
A. Is this station an E climate? Why or why not? (0.5 point)
Type E climates are typically controlled by the polar and artic air masses causing low
temperatures and much precipitation therefore, Akron could not be considered as a type E
climate.
B. Is this station a B climate? Why or why not? (0.5 point)
Because Type B climates exhibit low precipitation and great variability in
precipitation from year to year, this station could be considered a type B climate.
C. This station an A climate? Why or why not? (0.5 point)
Type A climates are controlled mainly by fluctuating trade winds and the intertropical
convergence zone. This station could be considered an A climate because of this.
D. Is this station a C climate? Why or why not? (0.5 point)
This station could be considered a C climate because of the seasonal variations caused
by polar fronts and air masses of tropical origin.
E. Is this station a D climate? Why or why not? (0.5 point)
This station could be considered as a D climate for the same reasons it could be
considered a C climate. Polar fronts and air masses are cause for seasonal variation. This can
include high intensity winds and great amounts of precipitation.
F. What is the climate type according to the Köppen Classification system for
this city? Provide the proper three letter classification. (0.5 point)
According to the Köppen Classification system, Akron is considered to have a Dfa climate.
Once problem 9 is graded, your lab instructor will update your grade in the Lab 7-
Climate Classification assignment.
