Name: __________________________________ UWIN 2 Activity: History of Denver and Exploring Parks via GIS The following activity serves as your UWIN 2 Post-lab. During class (and after class if you do not finish), you will explore GIS by learning more about the history of Denver and exploring one Denver-metro UWIN park. As you go through the activity, you will answer the following questions. This document will be submitted to the UWIN 2 Post-lab assignment link. Please type your answers in a different color to make reviewing your submissions easier. UWIN 2.1 – Science and Society Revisited Link: https://gwmke.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html? appid=3661f4dbe77e45c9951b4879c7401986 Question 1: Look at the graph titled “Environmental Risk Factors by HOLC Neighborhood Grades for All CSN Cities”. Describe the trends that you note for the following variables when comparing A, B, C, and D neighborhoods. a. Land surface temp: b. Impervious surface: c. Tree canopy cover: Question 2: Look at your answers above regarding trends for the three variables. How do you think this may impact plants and wildlife occupation and use of these neighborhoods? Question 3: As you move through the story map, you will see a map of outlined neighborhoods (in different colors to represent their grade) and the corresponding tree canopy cover as another layer. What is the climate advantage for neighborhoods with denser tree canopies? Question 4: As you move through the story map, you will see a map of outlined neighborhoods (in different colors to represent their grade) and the corresponding impervious surface cover as another layer. What are the disadvantages to higher amounts of impervious surface? Question 5: Heat Vulnerability Index (HVI) is a measure of the ability of neighborhoods to minimize the effects of extreme weather events, such as heat waves. On the map, choose 1 block from the following neighborhoods and record the HVI: d. Elyria e. Belcaro f. South Platte g. Country Club 1
Question 6: The next layer shows flood vulnerability across different Denver neighborhoods. Identify three neighborhoods that are at the HVI Top Quartile and have a 1% annual chance of flooding. What grade are these three neighborhoods? Question 7: Summarize two ways in which Groundwork Denver is working with communities to address issues related to neighborhood redlining. The remainder of the story map have example case studies for several Denver neighborhoods. I encourage you to skim through those to see some exciting initiatives and applied research to help promote well-being of citizens in those neighborhoods. Before you start the next UWIN sections, your TA will pull up a spreadsheet. Everyone will choose a different park that they will explore as a part of the UWIN 2 Post-lab. This does NOT need to be the park you plan to visit for extra credit nor the park that you and your group focus on for your Children’s Book. Question 8: What is the name of your UWIN location? Tip: Your TA can remind you where your section’s UWIN location assignments are located. UWIN 2.3 - Google MyMap Make sure you are signed into your Google account. This will allow you to access all of the features and will save the map you make to your Google Drive. Please follow the instructions in the lab manual. As you are working through the steps, please use the following questions to record your findings. Paste the link to your map: Question 9: Based on the instructions in the lab manual, what did you name your map? UWIN 2 Activity 2
Question 10: Provide a screenshot highlighting the three new layers you created (i.e., Distance to water, park area, and distance to nearest habitat): Tip: To make it easier for your TA to provide you credit, please try to crop/zoom the image to highlight the layers that you created. Tip: Figure captions are not necessary here Question 11: Provide a screenshot highlighting the new pin you created (i.e., Science Building): Tip: To make it easier for your TA to provide you credit, please try to crop/zoom the image to highlight the pin you created. Tip: Figure captions are not necessary here Question 12: What was the distance that you found between your UWIN location and the nearest body of water? Tip: If you are having trouble finding a source of water nearby, use your best judgement to find one. Question 13: When you were drawing the line around the boundary of your park, what was the area of the polygon that you created? Question 14: What was the distance that you found between your UWIN location and the nearest habitats? A) Distance to closest fox squirrel habitat: B) Distance to closest mule deer habitat: Question 15: What are the latitude and longitude coordinates for your UWIN location? Question 16: What is the radiance value for your UWIN location? Link: https://www.lightpollutionmap.info UWIN 2.4 - Google Street View UWIN 2 Activity 3
