Standard K.1.2 Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information on the effect of forecasted weather patterns on human behavior. Examples could include how humans respond to local forecasts of typical and severe weather such as extreme heat, high winds, flash floods, thunderstorms, or snowstorms. Learning Objective(s): Students will learn that there is a pattern to weather and learn about the weather for the seasons. Students will be able to identify the four seasons and correctly pick a weather condition that corresponds with the season 3 out of 4 times. Materials Technology Notebook for weather journal Markers/crayons/pencils Projector/smartboard Weather videos for kids on youtube
Projector/smartboard Weather chart Name strips for each child Book All About Weather by Huda Hurajli MD CD player with weather songs Language Demands Specific ways that academic language (vocabulary, functions, discourse, syntax) is used by students to participate in learning tasks through reading, writing, listening, and/or speaking to demonstrate their understanding. Language Function(s): Students will be able to identify different types of weather as well as past and future weather patterns. Vocabulary: Sun/Sunny Cloudy Rain Windy Snow Predict Cold Hot Dry Wet Yesterday Tomorrow Discourse and/or Syntax: Students will use a weather chart each day to choose what they weather is and then write in their journal what they see and feel for the weather that day. At the end of the day they will change their name to choose what they will predict the weather will be tomorrow. They will start to identify weather patterns. Planned Language Supports: Weather word wall Weather chart with pictures and labels Name strips for identifying their own name Books about weather for large group reading and small group
Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks Anticipatory Set: Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions Teacher will play weather songs from the corresponding CD Students will learn words and sing and dance. Presentation Procedures for New Information and/or Modeling: Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions During large group teacher will read book about weather and seasons. Then teacher will introduce weather chart. Students will identify different weather when discussing book. Students will practice predicting weather by placing name on weather chart. Guided Practice: Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions In small group centers the teacher will introduce weather journal and have students practice writing and drawing what the weather is. Students will write their journal page in small group using the weather word wall. Independent Student Practice: Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions Teacher will place the weather chart on the wall and place journals in basket on writing table. During center time the teacher will direct students to complete their journal At the beginning of the day and the end of the day the students will predict the weather. They will write in their journals during center time.
