What does Geographical Imagination mean and why is it important? (1
mark)
Geographical imagination is the way we as individuals perceive things based off
our unique experience. It is the way we envision relationships between places,
people, and environments. It is important because it creates critical thinking as
we must consider all factors (culture, politics, ecology etc.) relate to a
geographical context. It promotes spatial awareness and informative decision
making while analyzing different locations.
b.
Explain one way the above image [*the stark boundary between low and
high-income areas of Sao Paulo, Brazil] might influence someone's
geographical imagination. (i.e., What types of ideas would it promote?
What types of political actions/opinions might it inspire?) In your answer,
define and explain the relevance of TWO of the following terms (2 marks
each):
i.
Migration
ii.
NIDL
iii.
Nationalism
iv.
Racialization
v.
Slum
vi.
Peri-urbanism
The image above might influence someone’s geographical imagination to think
more in depth about the lack of spatial justice between low and high-income
areas. Spatial justice referring to unequal distribution of resources and
opportunities between the low and high-income. The picture addresses the
segregation between various urban environments. It could inspire political
action to advocate for social justice as well as policies to change the gap
between the two incomes to improve the slum living conditions. Slums are an
area where the living conditions are extremely poor, with inadequate housing
and lack of access to basic amenities. The relevance of slums to the
geographical imagination is that they represent the differences in living based
off socio-economic status and social inequalities. They highlight the poor urban
planning of these areas. Slums also show a lack of spatial justice as the
distribution of resources and opportunities is clearly not equal or equitable. The
second term that is relevant to the geographical imagination is migration.
Migration is the movement of people from one place to another. It is relevant in
the case of the stark boundary between the low-income and high-income in Sao
Paulo, Brazil because often times low-income cities have a higher concentration
of migrants. So, it is relevant because looking at the migration patterns can give
insight to the socio-economic boundary between low and high-income.
c.
Describe an alternative geographical imagination, that contrasts the one
you described above in part b. (1 mark)
an alternative geographical imagination that contrasts the one above could
highlight the positive and the potential for change. Focusing on opportunities for
shared resources.
