Component: Windshield Survey – Boundaries
Assessment
Seminole Heights, which is sometimes still referred to
as its former name, ‘Old Seminole Heights’ is a small
community located within Tampa, FL in Hillsborough
County. It has a population of 14,491people, ranking
just inside the top 20 most populated communities in
Tampa (City-data.com, 2020). Seminole Heights span
3.5 square miles in total. Interstate 2-75 runs through
the heart of Seminole Heights providing quick access.
This section connects to interstate 75 which can take
north out of Florida, or all the way to Miami.
In
addition, two major state roads are easily accessible,
as they run parallel to each other opposite side of the
community. There are only two post offices in this
area. One named after a neighboring community, has
been in the area since the 1900s. The Hillsborough
River runs along the anterior portion of the
community. Surrounding areas include Sulphur
Springs to the east, Town ‘N’ Country to the west and
Ybor City to the south. Surrounding counties include
Pasco county to the north, Pinellas county to the
west, Polk county to east, and Manatee county to the
south.
Analysis
The Seminole Heights community is quite easy to
navigate. Whether walking, traveling by vehicle, or
bike riding; there is an abundance of street signs
and appropriate display of crosswalks. There are
bike lanes for safe riding. Sidewalks have been
repaired when necessary and appropriately
maintained. There are plenty of small businesses
such as bakeries, coffee shops, and crafting. There
are two parks that offers a wide variety of
amenities. There are two elementary schools, one
middle school, and one high school. The parks
contain basketball court, tennis courts, a soccer
field, and playground equipment. The park also
contains plenty of picnic tables for use. there is one
fire station and police station servicing the area.

Seminole was established in
1911.
Demographic Data:
Seminole Heights population is
very diverse consisting of Caucasians, African
Americans, and Hispanics. Elderly people make up
most of the population. However, there is a mixture

In 1911, T. Roy Young established the residential
suburb, Seminole Heights. A real estate boom drew
more people to the residential area. from there, the
community saw an increase in business growth that
helped the community flourish (Harmon, 2020).
Seminole Heights is a family friendly community.
The community is designed to be welcoming and

of middle age and younger adults. Many children are
seen frequently, playing at the park or in their

How Does the Community Look:
Overall, the
community is upkept frequently. The neighborhood
has been thriving and growing since the early 1920s.

bungalow style house and ranch style. Some homes
in the community where more low-income families
reside are a bit bland. The community recently had a
redevelopment project to clean up the lower income
area by building better housing. There are plenty of
small businesses such as bakeries, coffee shops, and
crafting. There are two parks that offers a wide
variety of amenities. There are two elementary
schools, one middle school, and one high school. The
parks contain basketball court, tennis courts, a soccer
field, and playground equipment. The park also
contains plenty of picnic tables for use. There is one

The buildings and structures are matured and
maintained well. The historical features of the
community are displayed well to continue telling
the history of the community’s origins. The trees

families out and about enjoying the scenery and
what the community has to offer with its
businesses, and parks.

Assessment Findings
Religion:
There are many churches within the
Seminole Heights Community. Some of the churches
within the community are El-Bethel Baptist Church,
Northeast United Methodist Church, Faith Baptist of
Tampa, Great Commission Baptist Church, and
Seminole Heights United Methodist Church. In
addition to these, there are a few Lutheran churches,
an Episcopal, and some non-denominational
churches as well.
Health & Social Services
:
The Seminole heights
community consists mainly of elderly people. With
this population, hypertension, heart failure, and

are multiple denominational churches of which are
all extremely active within the community. All the
local churches are family friendly.
The two top hospitals in the area both non-profit.
These hospitals provide care to every population.
The level 1 trauma center is also certified as burn
center which allows them to provide additional care
to a critical population. There are multiple services

diabetes are quite common. Mental illness is not
something that is seen a lot in this area. drug
addiction and overdosing has become an emerging
pattern with the younger adult and teenagers. There
both hospitals can offer to help the underserved
and uninsured people in the community.
These
services can help with both chronic and acute
problems. For minor problems that may still require
a visit to the hospital, there are two other smaller
are multiple doctor’s offices, clinics and dentist
throughout the community. While there is not
hospital within the Seminole Heights community
there are 4 in close proximity. Two of the of the
hospitals are major area non-profit hospitals. One is
considered a level 1, magnet status trauma center
and is located south. The other, a level 2 trauma
center which is located west of Seminole Heights.
There is a community clinic that services everyone.
The community contains a variety of childcare
options. There are private options, care provided by
the churches, and the city.
Economy:
The economy in Seminole Heights has
been constant over the years. There are several
businesses that attract locals from all over the Tampa
Bay area. There are a few shopping centers including
Publix and Walmart. In addition, the famed Meat
House store is known to draw a crowd, especially
around the holidays. Recently, renovations to the
area has. Brought in more restaurants and chain gas
stations to Seminole Heights like Wawa’s. This has
brought even more jobs and boosted the economy
for this area.
Transportation:
Many people drive their own
vehicles. There are a lot of bike riders and people
walking casually to their destination. There is a major
transportation system that services the area called
Hart. This transportation service is open to the
public. There is also a service for those with
disabilities who need transportation to and from
home directly and cannot travel to a bus stop.
Safety
: Seminole Heights has many sidewalks that are
well maintained. Theses sidewalks are commonly
used for biking riding and family walks. There is a
police and fire station serving the area. there is
minimal criminal activity that is usually handled very
swiftly by the police department. Seminole Heights is
a safe neighborhood to raise a family.

equipped to treat every population long-term. This
hospital does not treat pediatric, neonatal, or
obstetric patients. If in need, they can stabilize, and
transfer to a more appropriate facility. The
community health clinic serves those with lack of
insurance coverage, low-income, and the elderly
population on a fixed income. They provide
preventative treatment as well as treatment for
acute and chronic illnesses. Also, they can assist
with refills for prescriptions. For women, there is
affordable pregnancy care and treatment provided
through the clinic. Childcare is offer throughout
Seminole Heights for any income situation. the city
offers assistance with childcare for low-income
families. Many churches in the community offer
free or affordable childcare. Lastly, there is the
option for private childcare as well.
Seminole’s economy does very well. With new
businesses creating more stability for the economy,
more jobs are been flooded into the area. Publix,
although a big business, is a staple in the
community. It is easily accessible for quick shopping
and job opportunities. There are many new bars and
restaurants being built.
Designated bicycle lanes provide safe travel areas
for bike riders. Many people drive their own
vehicles. The public transportation service, Hart,
provides service to everyone. This include those
with disabilities that require home services.
Sidewalks are free from cracks, breaks, and uneven
gravel. Families are seen out walking, running, bike
riding, and playing. Trees lining the sidewalk provide
shade from the sunshine. The fire and police
department are present in the community often.

Politics & Government
: Currently, there are a few
political signs displayed throughout the community.
There are a few signs support Republicans party and
a few signs support Democratic party.
During election time, there are political signs
displayed throughout the community. Usually there
are billboards. Due to current circumstances,
billboards are being used for other purposes.
Communication / Media:
Seminole Heights has lots of
gathering and family events at the American Legion
park. American Legion hosts Volleyball, tennis, and
basketball tournaments, field day, and movie night.
American Legion is a pet-friendly park that welcomes
all. There are also picknicks and family events going
on at the parks as well.
Education
: The Seminole Heights community has 5
public schools within its neighborhood that educates
3,416 students and employs 239 teachers to provide
lecture (Public School Review, 2020). There are two
elementary schools for grades kindergarten to grade
5, one middle school for grades 6 through 8, and one
high school for grades 9 through 12.
Recreation:
Seminole Heights offers two recreational
parks for family enjoyment. Theses parks contain a
basketball court, tennis courts, a soccer field, and
plenty of playground equipment. The park also
contains plenty of picnic tables for family gatherings.
During the summer, the Olympic training pool is filled
with children and their families enjoying a day out.
Values
: The community is very diverse. There are
people from various backgrounds and ethnicities
among the community. There are individuals who
speak Spanish, Chinese, and Hindi in addition to
English. There are restaurants from different cultures
including Mexican, Indian, Japanese and Chinese. The
community receives each other very well. People can
be observed talking to one another regardless of
race.
There is a large recreational center to host
community and family events. Sports tournaments
such as volleyball, tennis, and basketball keep the
park nearby busy. Movie night occupies the children
for a few a night during the summer. Families enjoy
time together during barbecues and picnics.
The schools in the Seminole Heights community are
located in a wonderful school district. The buildings
are maintained often and have been updated in
recent years. The graduation rate is 90%. The school
generally tests well although there has been some
slight declines. The faculty and teachers and fully
supported by the community whom are heavily
invested in supporting the overall success of the
school. The school’s international baccalaureate
program is wide known throughout the community
for education top academically advanced students.
A lot of money and time goes into this program. The
community and leadership need to find equal
balance to support and fund all educational aspects
of the school. The school has plenty of elective and
extracurricular outlets for creative expression.
There is a large recreational center to host
community and family events. Sports tournaments
such as volleyball, tennis, and basketball keep the
park nearby busy. Movie night occupies the children
for a few a night during the summer. Families enjoy
time together during barbecues and picnics. The
Olympic pool is a staple in the community as it often
draws Olympic swimmers and hopefuls when the
trials are near. It also serves as a teaching pool for
new learners.
The community contains very positive and hopeful
values. Everyone is welcomed in Seminole Heights
with open arms.
