Properties of Soil: Agricultural
and Water Availability Impacts
Introduction In this week’s lab I learned about soil and the numerous effects it has on humans and the environment. This subject is important because it “earth’s soil plays a major role in the world’s agriculture and has a substantial effect on water availability in a given area (Carolina Distance Learning, n.d.).” I also learned that there are different layers or horizons of soil that contain different organic content and mineral compositions. Soil fertility is based on the pH value of found in soil, in which anything under the 7 on the pH scale is considered acidic. So rainwater with a pH level of 5.5 is considered acidic. I hypothesized that the percentages of soil sample A would be: 60% sand, 30% slit, 10% clay in activity 1. In Activity 2 I hypothesized that the soil would have the highest porosity because of how loose it is. I believe the clay will have the least porosity because it is more compact. For Activity 3 I hypothesized that Soil sample B will be less acidic because it was found further below the ground. Lastly for Activity 4 I hypothesized that sample A would contain more nutrients due to it being in O-horizon is the most nutrient-rich part of the soil profile.
