Bottle Rocket Assignment A bottle rocket is a bottle in which air and water is placed under pressure before the bottle is released in an upward direction. In this assignment, you will construct a bottle rocket in groups of three using your knowledge of Newton’s Law of motion. Task 1. Construct a bottle rocket similar to the image on the right. Your rocket must have the following properties, have a cone nose, fins and a parachute that opens when the rocket is launched. 2. Launch the rocket. Make sure to note down your observations of the distance (this will be included in your report) 3. Create a report with the following information. Report is individual for each group member. a. Pick a country that does space exploration and write a brief description of what they do. Each student must pick a different country to do the research on. b. Use the concepts of dynamics to explain how rockets work when they are launched and also how they are able to travel in space c. Describe how rockets/ space exploration impacts society and environment, in reference to your chosen country. d. A labeled diagram of your rocket e. Observation table of what happened on lunch day (altitude triangulated by a clinometer) f. Reflection: Discuss how your rocket worked in terms of height compared to other groups, did your parachute work and improvement that you would make to your rocket. g. Reference list. Make sure to include in-text citations Rocket Flight Data Collection Sheet Average inclinometer reader height (Person) (m) Angle θ 1 ( o ) Angle θ 2 ( o ) Distance between readers (m) Time (s) h(m)
Learning Goals: C3: Student can analyze the impact of technologies that use the concepts of dynamics on society and environment Success Criteria C1.1 : I can use the engineering design process to design and test a water-bottle rocket C3.2: I can describe the history and important achievements made by the chosen space agency C3.3: I can describe how the rockets uses the concepts of dynamics C3.4 : I can describe how rockets impact society and environment in chosen country Mastered Level 4 Accomplished Level 3 Developing Level 2 Beginning Level 1 Not Yet Met Mark Unique and creative design of the rocket. Included all required elements such as the nose cone, sleeve, parachute and fins. Constructed a rocket that was somewhat unique . Includes all required elements such as nose cone, sleeve, parachute and fins Constructed a typical designed rocket. Included most of the required elements such as the cones, sleeve , parachute and fins. Constructed a typical designed rocket . that is Messy and parts are falling apart. /4 The rocket was able to successfully launch and the parachute was deployed after reaching max height The rocket was able to successfully launch and the parachute deployed before or during launch. The rocket was able to launch , and the parachute was not able to deploy or came off during launch The rocket was unable to launch and d id not have a parachute /4 Provided a neat and organized label diagram of the constructed diagram. The diagram was to scale . Provided a label diagram with all parts labeled Provided a messy label diagram with some parts labeled Provided a diagram of rockets with missing labels /messy and not using ruler /2
