Week 3 Assignment
Sustainable Living Guide Contributions, Part Three of Four:
Sustaining Our Water Resources Rainwater Harvesting
Rainwater harvesting is a process of collecting and storing rainwater for use. When it rains a lot of water can cause bad runoff in certain areas that can cause flooding. This term is important to know because the collection of rainwater plays a vital role in water conservation. Collecting rainwater and not allowing it to run off it allows people to use less water that is treated from water plants to save money and help the environment. The collection of rainwater is
beneficial to lower our water footprint by reusing a natural source of water. Water is an essential element needed for life and rainwater harvesting is an easy process that can be done at any home.
The term rainwater harvesting affects living beings because it allows people to use free rainwater as a primary or backup water source saving money. Although rainwater can be polluted there are easy ways to filter the bacteria. People can use the methods of sand filtration or
solar technology that is efficient and low on cost (Helmreich & Horn, 2009). Rainwater harvesting also affects the physical environment by not allowing water runoff to pollute stormwater and local bodies of water in communities (Maxwell-Gaines, 2018). The runoff of rainwater can cause flooding and contaminate local bodies of water with pollutants. When people
use rainwater harvesting it helps with the conservation of our clean water sources.
My classmates and I can start rainwater harvesting at home and introduce our family and friends to the concept to get them on board as well. An easy start can be by setting up gutters to run down to barrels as a collection point. The following URL shares ways to create your own rainwater harvesting system, https://www.watercache.com/education/rainwater-harvesting-101
. The second way is by using a charged system which collects rainwater through pipes that run from a gutter that collects the water underground. This gives a higher capacity for rainwater collection. Both systems are great ways to incorporate rainwater, but depending on the use we will have to treat the water to protect us from bacteria that can be introduced from the water running off the roof and gutters. If we don’t plan on treating the rainwater, rainwater harvesting works great to water lawns or gardens, washing vehicles, and for any use other than consumption
or on your body.
