In this assignment, you’ll accompany your discussion instructor and classmates on a guided walk to discover the work of weathering on buildings and landscapes on the UA campus. You’ll aim to connect concepts from this week’s class to what you’re seeing, and you should aim to observe various consequences and examples of both physical and chemical weathering. 1. Consider the six basic controls on weathering (precipitation, temperature, freeze and thaw cycles, orientation, presence of vegetation, and climate), then take a photo of one particular example of weathering you saw. Which of these controls do you think most directly controlled the weathering you see, and why? You can choose more than one control. (15 points) I chose vegetation and I believe this most directly controlled the weathering I see. 2. Take a photo of joints appearing in a solid substrate (whether rock or a piece of the built environment like a building or road). What is jointing, and how is it likely to affect the structure of this substrate over time? (10 points) I chose a built environment like a building. In this picture concrete is jointing and it is likely to affect the structure of this substrate over time by possible cracking.
3. Take two more photos , one of an example of physical weathering and one of an example of chemical weathering. In each case, how did you determine what kind of weathering you were looking at? (15 points) I was not able to find any examples of physical and chemical weathering so I added some pictures from online.. Physical weathering: Chemical weathering: You can determine what kind of weathering you are looking at based on the condition of the rock. 4. Take one more photo of an example of erosion that you encountered on your walk. How do erosion and weathering differ? (10 points) I was not able to find any examples of erosion on my walk. However, here are some pictures from online. Erosion and weathering differ because erosion happens when rock particles are chipped away from weather and water. Whereas weathering is when rock is degraded without being displaced.
