This course covers the processes that influence the nature of Earth's surface at all different scales, from the global (circulation of the atmosphere), to the continental (e.g. extensive glaciers covering much of North America in the last ice age), to areas the size of a football field (e.g. the area where the returning lightning stroke picks a "stepped leader" to create the cloud-to-ground lightning strike). Most people complete mess up and reverse what is meant by "large scale" and "small scale". Think about scale in terms of a fraction. A scale of 1:1 on a map is where one length on the map equals one length on the ground. That is a very big scale. You have to use a microscope to get a bigger scale. In contrast, a scale of 1:10,000,000 is a tiny fraction, where this scale can display a very large area because one inch on the map, for example, would show 10 million inches (157 miles) on the ground. This lab practical tasks you with (hopefully chuckling when you) examining different comics from the perspective of scale (in terms of a representative fraction). The idea is to look at the comic and then select the best analysis of the comic from the perspective of scale.
