Group Activity #6
Directions: Complete the activity on each slide Unless otherwise noted questions are graded for correctness. You will receive complete credit, half credit, or no credit for each question. Work effectively as a group and follow your group contract Group # First and Last Names of contributors and the slide number(s) they contributed to (you may write "all members contributed equally to all slides"): Sierra Stodghill (slides 5 & 9) Shenna Tawiah (slides 6 & 7) Kingsley Doyle (slides 8 & 10) Avante Robinson (slides 3 & 4) Will Reeves (slide 7) Names of any non-contributors. If a non-contributing member contacted you with a reason please include this information (write N/A if everyone contributed): Total Points: 10 points ***All member names should be listed on this slide.  If needed, please refer to D2L Groups tab to see who is in your group*** ***FAILURE TO FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS MAY RESULT IN POINTS BEING DEDUCTED***
1. Use the logistic growth equation to answer the following (1 point) Using the logistic growth equation (SHOW YOUR WORK !) demonstrate why 8,500 platypuses inhabiting the rivers of the broadleaf forest that has a carrying capacity of 8500 platypuses would have a growth rate that is 0 Once this has been calculated, explain why this make sense from a biological perspective 8500(8500 – 8500/8500) = 0 Because the rivers can sustain 8500 platypuses, the 8500 platypuses have exactly the number of resources they need, so they can have a stable growth rate. hint: see the logistic growth equation *SHOW YOUR WORK
2. Use the logistic growth equation to answer the following (1 point) Using the logistic growth equation (SHOW YOUR WORK!) demonstrate why 2 aquatic fish in a large mesocosm (mini artificial ecosystem) that could sustain 300,000,000 fish would initially grow at a rate that is nearly exponential. Once this has been calculated, explain why this make sense from a biological perspective. 2(300,000,000 – 2/300,000,000) = 1.99 Because there are more resources than population, the fish have more than enough resources to exponentially grow their population. *hint: see the logistic growth formula *SHOW YOUR WORK
