Physical Geography Lab Exercise 13 - Faulting & Diastrophism Landforms Name: Materials: Lab Manual, Ruler, Colored Pencils Terms and Objectives: coastal processes wave refraction topographic profiles (from last week) headlands & bays spits wave cut platforms diastrophic stress compression tension shearing Folding Anticline Syncline Faulting Normal Fault Reverse Fault Strike Slip Fault Part 1: Coastal Questions Answer the following based on the Dana Point Quadrangle map (attached). 1. Draw arrows on the map where wave energy is being concentrated. 2. On the map, color & label the following features: deposition (blue) erosion (red) headlands cliffs wave cut platform (brown) 3. Describe the position of PCH in the future if erosion continues. 4. Beside the ocean/coast, is there another source of deposited material along the shoreline? Describe the source. 5. How should state and federal funds be allocated to people who choose to live in an area subject to erosion?
Part 2: Lab Manual - San Andreas Fault In you lab manual do Chapter 32, Part I & II problems. Part 3: Diastrophism Read introductory material for chapter 31. Diastrophism is the bending or warping of the earth’s crust. Diastrophism occurs in the interior of tectonic plates as a result of the movement along the plate boundaries. Diastrophism is easiest to identify in sedimentary rock due to the Law of Superposition, although it occurs in all types of lithosphere. Law of Superposition: In a layer of sedimentary rock, the oldest rock is the bottom layer and the rocks get younger as you move toward the surface. Lab Assignment: A. Draw a figure illustrating the diastrophic landform created by each type of stress. 1. Normal Fault 2. Folding – Anticline & Syncline 3. Reverse Fault & Thrust Fault 4. Slip-Strike Fault
