HUMN1041 People Place and Social Difference 6. What Aboriginal country is this suburb located? (Tip: use the instructions here to help you find out: https://aiatsis.gov.au/whose-country ) PART II: DESCRIPTION OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC DIFFERENCES (250 words – 4 marks in total; 1 mark for each of the four questions below) 1. Locate the ABS QuickStats Comparison Tables at the end of this template (in the Appendix) 2. Fill in the data for the two Sydney suburbs you have chosen Note: The step-by-step guide to downloading this data and completing these tables is included before the tables in the Appendix. We covered the skills needed to complete these tables in the Week 1 homework activity. 3. Using the ABS data, describe four (4) of the main socio-economic differences between the two Sydney Suburbs you have chosen. To do this you will need to look carefully at the comparison tables you have completed. 1. The average weekly salaries are the most significant aspect of socioeconomic life that separates Vaucluse and Liverpool. In contrast to Vaucluse, where the typical individual revenue was $1,393, Liverpool's is $589, a figure that is noticeably lower. Liverpool's GDP is also substantially lower than the national average in every other area. According to the 2021 Census, the median family weekly earnings in Liverpool was $1,475, while it was $4,560 in Vaucluse. The standard weekly earnings for households in Liverpool was $1,303, while it was $3,418 in Vaucluse. 2. The average monthly loan payment is the following socioeconomic variation among Liverpool and Vaucluse. The average monthly repayment of mortgages in Vaucluse is $4,200 as opposed to $1,733 in Liverpool. Vaucluse's average loan payment is two times greater than Liverpool's median mortgage payment. Furthermore, the average weekly rental payment also illustrates this disparity. In comparison, Vaucluse has a weekly median rent of $700 whereas Liverpool's is 360 dollars. Also noteworthy is the fact that the median values weekly rent in Vaucluse is only a high of 13. compared to a quarter in Liverpool, where it accounts for the majority of each family's income. 3. When contrasting Liverpool and Vaucluse's greatest levels of education, a social and economic gap can be pointed out. Compared to Liverpool's 20.2%, 49.0% of people in Vaucluse have a college degree. Liverpool has a bachelor's degree rate that is approximately 2.8 times less than Vaucluse. 2 Australia

In comparison to Vaucluse, Liverpool has a rate of joblessness that is nearly three times higher. In comparison to Vaucluse, which had a 4.0% jobless rate in 2021, Liverpool had a whopping 10.2% rate. 3
HUMN1041 People Place and Social Difference PART III: EXPLANATION OF REASONS FOR SOCIO-ECONOMIC DIFFERENCES (500 words - 10 marks) Use at least two (2) academic sources (i.e. journal articles, books chapters or books), and the lectures from this unit, to explain some of the main reasons for the socio-economic differences you have identified between your comparison suburbs in Part II. Note: The academic sources you use MUST come from the weekly readings for Weeks 2-3 OR the Assignment 1 reading list (see below). All of these readings can be downloaded using the links provided in the ’Readings and Resources’ link on vUWS. Your response to Part III MUST be based on ideas from the lectures and academic texts listed above. They MUST NOT be based upon personal opinion. Please ensure that you provide in-text citations using Western Sydney University’s Harvard Referencing Style (http://library.westernsydney.edu.au/main/sites/default/files/cite_Harvard.pdf). We will cover referencing in the Week 2 Lecture Pod Academic referencing and writing . Type your response below this line The term "spatial disadvantage" refers to a variety of alleged differences between a region and the people who live there according to their economic level (Wiesel, Liu, & Buckle 2018). According to Wiesel, Liu, and Buckle (2018), a region's socioeconomic status can be correlated with both the amount and the quality of assets including jobs, transportation, goods or services, and aesthetics. With regard to earnings, schooling, accessibility to housing, and rate of unemployment, Liverpool suffers from geographical difficulties when compared to the municipalities of Vaucluse and Liverpool. Liverpool's revenue is its biggest socioeconomic barrier. According to Waitt, McGurk, Dunn, Hartig, and Burnley (2000), one of the most important factors influencing geographical radicalization is affluence. According to Waitt, McGurk, Dunn, Hartig, and Burnley (2000), impoverished areas consisting of Liverpool tend to have a higher percentage of people with low incomes with fewer credentials. As stated by Waitt, McGurk, Dunn, Hartig, and Burnley (2000), the consequence of financial stratification forces those with modest incomes to relocate to lower-status areas since they are more affordable. The socioeconomic disparity across Vaucluse and Liverpool is further accentuated by higher academic achievement. In the opinion of Waitt, McGurk, Dunn, Hartig, and Burnley (2000, 2000), a person's level of education has a major effect on their ability to 4
HUMN1041 People Place and Social Difference find potential jobs and more lucrative positions. The amenities and caliber of the professors, as well as other aspects of education quality, vary greatly. In comparison to Vaucluse, Liverpool has an inferior median income and a lower proportion of people with bachelor's degrees. According to Bangura and Lee (2019), residential ownership and the cost among low- to middle-income have been on the decline in Australia in the past few years. Australia's housing expenses have skyrocketed recently, far more so than the country's GDP growth (Bangura & Lee 2019). Both affordable housing and the legislative framework now in place in Sydney are not favorable to those with low incomes (Bangura & Lee 2019). This may be observed by contrasting Liverpool with Vaucluse, where 48.1% of tenants' weekly rental expenses in the Liverpool region are in excess of or comparable to 30% of the income they make as a family. When compared to Vaucluse, where just 46.1% of renters pay or are equivalent to 30% of their overall income on rent. A significant socioeconomic distinction is access to jobs (Waitt, McGurk, Dunn, Hartig & Burnley 2000). In the report by Waitt, McGurk, Dunn, Hartig, and Burnley (2000), joblessness in Sydney's higher-status districts ranged from 4 to 7 percent during 1992, compared to 8 to 17 percent in lower-status suburbs. According to the 2021 census, Vaucluse has a 4.0% jobless rate which is lower than Liverpool's 10.2%. The highest percentages of joblessness are seen in places like Liverpool that have low average incomes (Waitt, McGurk, Dunn, Hartig & Burnley 2000). In addition to having a far lower median income for families than Vaucluse, as already stated, Liverpool also has a significantly greater unemployment rate. 5
