2 Planning Document First Rough Draft My issue: Ocean Acidification impacts us more than anyone realizes. Yes it is the ocean and yes we live on land, however we rely on the ocean for more than we realize. I have three boys and I want to leave them a world they can thrive in not just survive. Our oceans are so vital to this, they cover a majority of the earth's surface. Most people are aware of gases released into the atmosphere and the potential effects that has but often times we forget our oceans. Our oceans are the primary absorber of CO2 and as such causes changes in their makeup. They are becoming increasingly acidic which impacts the ocean life. We lose species every day and we have yet to even discover a fraction of what lives in the oceans, we could be losing vital species and not know it. Losing species inevitably has a negative impact on the ecosystem. We may not feel like that would impact us as we live on land but it would impact other life in the ocean that we do depend on for things like food. My question: How does the effects of the acidification affect the ocean ecosystem and what impact does that have on humans and our way of life? My science resources: 1. Understanding Ocean Acidification I chose this article as it was done by the National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration. They are a scientific based organization that focuses on weather and the oceans. This article discuses what ocean acidification is in a way that everyone can understand discuses initially what effects it could have on human life. 2. Ocean Acidification and Human Health
3 This article discusses how initially everyone thought ocean acidification only affected marine life but here they discuss how that actually impacts human health. It can affect the food we eat from the ocean which impacts us, additionally it addresses things like respiratory issues, mental health impacts, and even medical resources. 3. Ocean Acidification affects our health in many ways Another article that describes how the impact to ocean life impacts human life. Many societies rely heavily upon fish as a source of protein. It also discusses how pollutants are absorbed and can accumulate in human tissue as well as neurotoxins. My audience and message: Ocean acidification affects us all so for me the ideal target audience is a combination of the general public and policy makers. The general public needs to know and understand what is happening and how this will affect them. By enlightening them they also can provide support and "pressure" to policy makers to take action. When the public is aware they can become passionate and advocates for a cause. When a group of them band together (the more the better) and approach policy makers the impact is by far more effective than a single individual trying to incite change. Power lies with a common cause and common interest. If people knew how much this can affect them or their children or grandchildren, they would be more apt to bond together for the greater good. Bringing in some experts in the field will help add validity and value to the message but I have to be careful not to bring in too much of that as people get lost in technical jargon and then tend to lump activists together as "tree huggers" and the message gets lost.
