2 Planning Document Second Rough Draft My issue: An issue I have chosen to research in the natural sciences is Geologist discovered remains of a lost mega-plate. This tectonic plate was once one-quarter the size of the Pacific Ocean and the team had predicted its existence over ten years ago based on fragments of old tectonic plates found deep in the Earth's mantle. This long-suspected plate was soon given a name Pontus, found on the northern Borneo. This issue is significant because understanding the movements of the tectonic plates make up the Earth’s surface (outer shell) and is essential to understand the planet’s geological history. The movement of the tectonic plates are highly influenced by the planet’s paleogeography and climate change over time. This research shows how geologist uncover millions of years work from the Earth’s mantle to the crust by tracing disruptions such as fragments of tectonic plates. My question: How are tectonic plates responsible for the Earth’s climate changes as they are continually moving and changing the way scientists predict the history of geological events? My science resources: 1. My first source is titled: “Pangaea.” I chose this resource because it is the most relevant information given about the discovery on Pangaea- when “all lands” existed as one 270 million years ago. This features a breakdown of the Pangaea Theory following plate tectonics and formation of super continents. This later breaks down the formation and developement of the Earth’s cratons and principal terms that help the reader understand the jargon from the scientific evaluation. This would help the beginning of my paper as well because it gives the reader a sense of how I am going to interpret my research
3 question. It is somewhat broad, but this helps start the idea why I chose to write about “the beginning” to present day. Later in my paper explain a new discovery of a lost tectonic plate that has shocked scientists from the formation of Pangaea to how the tectonic plates effect climate changes and how geologist predict the history of geological events. 2. My second source is titled: “Revolutions in the earth sciences.” I chose this source because it gives me three concepts of major breakthroughs in the revolution of the 20th century. Plate tectonics, Planetology, and the environment which I will mainly focus on how it has affected the environment over time, this is because I want to incorporate after writing about the Pangaea theory, climate change or how environmental shifts are continually affecting human nature and society. This is academic in nature and relevant to my research question- how climate changes are affected by the nature of tectonic plates shifting because it leds to natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, etc. Compared to other sources I believe this gives another idea or example for the book's definition of revolution within the sciences. 3. My third source is titled: “University of Birmingham: Diamond domino effect explains eruption spot secrets; Tectonic plate breakup discovery could spark future discoveries of precious gems.” I chose this source because after stating my research question- I want to explain that not only has the “lost” tectonic plate have been a new and recent discovery, so has those eruptions have lifted a new level of tension within the plates, gems. This gIves a brief history and description how Kimberlites history reveal Earths existence of diamonds. This is a small artcle, hence why it is so new, but this will give my paper a new step into looking forward to after exploring my research
