Does mold grow better on bread moistened with pond, tap, filtered, or hard water? I would hope more mold would grow on the bread moistened with pond water because I don't come into contact with it as much. If it grows best on bread moistened with the water I touch or drink, that would mean it's a good host for bacteria. Thus, I'd figure out that the water I drink may not be as clean as I thought. Hypothesis: The bread moistened with pondwater will grow mold better than the household water. Materials four Mason jars (including the lids) one cup each of cold hard, pond, tap, and filtered water one or two slices of bread knife four droppers four cups (or four containers that can each hold one cup of a different type of water) thermometer painter’s tape label maker or the painter’s tape and a sharpie or pen Purpose: To see what type of water grows mold best on bread. Procedure 1. In the four cups, gather the different kinds of water. Make sure that it is all cold to begin with. Then, allow all of it to sit for an hour so it reaches room temperature. After the hour, you can test the water with a thermometer to make sure it is between 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. This would be room temperature and you can move on. (If not, allow it to sit for 30 more minutes or until reaches 68 to 72 degrees F.) 2. While the water is cooling, slice the bread into half inch cubes. They should all be about the same. 3. Using the tape and writing utensil or label maker, label the mason jars with the names of the different waters. 4. Once the water has cooled, assign five cubes of bread for each type of water. You should have 20 cubes altogether. Use one dropper for every kind of water. Drop ten drops of one of the kinds of water onto each of the five cubes of bread for that type of water. Once ten drops of one type of water has been distributed to its five pieces of bread, quickly tilt its corresponding jar horizontally and align the bread along the inside of the mason jar. Screw on the lid tightly and tape the edge of it to the jar with the painter’s tape. (Make sure you use one dropper per every kind of water, and once the ten drops of one kind have been put onto each of the five pieces of bread, place the bread immediately into their jar.)
5. Repeat step four until you have used fifty drops of each type of water for its five cubes of bread. 6. Make sure to put the mason jars in a place where they will not be disturbed. You will need to place them all in the same area, lying horizontally so that your controlled variables are all the same. 7. Observe each jar every day. Take notes on what you observe and organize your data into the table below. You may not see much for the first two or three days but can expect to see mold visible to the eye by day four, five, or six. In the table include the color, texture and size of the mold. Also, include any other observations you make. Day Pond Water Hard Water Filtered Water Tap Water 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
