Module 08 Part 1 Metamorphic rock identification and
interpretation Lab/Quiz
Purpose
The purpose of completing this lab assignment is to reinforce the concepts presented in this Module and
to help you understand the basic criteria used to classify metamorphic rocks and the environments in
which they are formed. You'll be bearing in mind some of the lessons of the Minerals, Igneous Rocks,
and Sedimentary Rocks lab here, and establishing competence in the final domain of rock identification,
building a foundation for the collaborative Rock Identification and Interpretation assignment at the end of
this unit. Use this MOD 08_Metamorphic Rocks_ID-key.pdf
(https://learn.vccs.edu/courses/561798/files/147273938/download?wrap=1) (https://learn.vccs.edu/courses/561798/files/147273938/download?download_frd=1) classification chart to
put names to the different samples. Directions
Virtual samples for Metamorphic Rocks
(http://opengeology.org/historicalgeology/virtual-sample-
sets/vss-metamorphic-rocks/) for this lab are online.
The format of these virtual samples is "GigaPans," very large photos that you can explore by
zooming in to check out details. You may need Flash installed on your computer in order to view
these GigaPans.
Examine the specimens in the order specified, bearing in mind additional information that is
described in the assignment. Answer the questions to the best of your ability.
You have the ability to go back and change your answers before submitting the assignment.
There is no time limit, but you cannot save and return later to finish. You must finish each attempt in
one sitting.
You have 3 attempts to complete the assignment. The highest grade will be saved in Grades for this
assignment.

Question 1
Samples A, B, and C are all examples of schist: different kinds of schist,
each with distinctive porphyroblasts.
Which schist sample is dominated by the mineral muscovite
?
Sample A Sample B Sample C All three schists are dominated by muscovite mica.

Samples A, B, and C are all examples of schist: different kinds of schist,
each with distinctive porphyroblasts.
Which schist sample has porphyroblasts of the mineral garnet
?
Sample A Sample B Sample C All three display garnet. 1 / 1 pts
Question 3
Samples A, B, and C are all examples of schist: different kinds of schist,
each with distinctive porphyroblasts.

Samples A, B, and C are all examples of schist: different kinds of schist,
each with distinctive porphyroblasts.
Which schist sample has porphyroblasts of the mineral glaucophane
?
Sample A Sample B Sample C All three display glaucophane. 1 / 1 pts
Question 5
The graphs below compare various combinations of metamorphic
temperature / pressure conditions. Different metamorphic rocks form
under different conditions.
The second graph shows the tectonic interpretation of these different
metamorphic "facies."
Consider the minerals found in schist samples A, B, and C.
Which of the three is an example of blueschist, a rock that forms in
subduction zones, where the temperature is relatively low compared to
the high pressure?

Question 6
Compare samples D and E.
"D" is a small sample of rock, about 4 cm across. "E" is an outcrop of rock;
a yellow pencil on the outcrop provides a sense of scale.
Both "D" and "E" exhibit a distinctive metamorphic texture. What is it?
Foliation: slaty cleavage Foliation: schistocity Foliation: gneissic banding Nonfoliation: "fused" texture
1 / 1 pts
Question 7
Compare samples D and E again.
You identified an important metamorphic texture in the previous question.
What is the other feature to be seen in these rocks?
gneissic banding porphyroblasts brecciation

Question 8
Incorrect
Incorrect
Compare samples D and E again.
You identified an important metamorphic texture and a primary feature of
the protolith in the previous questions. What do these features imply about
the tectonic history of these two samples?
This question has two (2) possible correct answers. You will receive .5
points for each correct answer and lose .5 points for each incorrect
answer selection.
The rocks experienced low grades of metamorphism. The rocks experienced high grades of metamorphism. The rocks experienced confining pressure only. The rocks experienced differential stress. 0 / 1 pts
Question 9
