Geology of Natural Resources
Chapter Questions
1.
What is the basic distinction between a renewable and a nonrenewable resource?
Renewable resources can be replenished over time while nonrenewable resources cannot.
2.
Why are energy resources considered the most essential of all natural resources?
Energy resources are considered the most essential because most of them are easily
accessible and can be replenished over time.
3.
What is the relationship between energy consumption and industrial production?
Energy Consumption and Industrial Production is considered among the most important
factors because of its direct relationship with economic development.
4.
Why has oil become the dominant form of commercial energy? Which countries are the
main producers of crude oil?
Oil has become a dominant form of commercial energy because it supplies 33% of all
energy in the world. The main producers of crude oil are China, Saudi Arabia, Russia,
USA, and Canada.
5.
What is hydraulic fracturing and how has it changed the geographic patterns of energy
production? What are its advantages and disadvantages?
Hydraulic Fracturing is the forcing open of fissures in subterranean rocks by introducing
liquid at high pressure, especially to extract oil or gas. Hydraulic Fracturing has changed
the geographic patterns of energy production because it is now easier accessible.
Advantages of hydraulic fracturing are correct management of fracking fluids, prevents
environmental harm and the fracking process occurs underneath the groundwater layer.
The disadvantages of hydraulic fracturing is the fracking industry is responsible for about
40% of U.S. methane from natural gas production, an investment in fracking is money
that doesn’t go to renewable energy, and some fracking companies do not publish the
ingredients in their fracking fluid.
6.
Since 2000, the proportion of U.S. energy supplied by coal has decreased while the
proportion supplied by natural gas has increased. What is causing this change? What are
the benefits of the switch from coal to natural gas?
The cause of this change is because coal use has decreased. The benefits of switching
from coal to natural gas is less fumes going into the air from the burning of it.
7.
Which are the most widely employed ways of using renewable resources to generate
energy? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using such resources? What sorts
of physical environments and locations are best suited to each of the renewable energy
sources?
Hydropower is the most widely-used renewable power source. Advantages of renewable
resources are renewable energy won’t run out, maintenance requirements are lower,
renewable energy has numerous health and environmental benefits, and renewables save
money. Disadvantages of renewable resources are higher upfront cost, geographic
limitations, storage capabilities, and intermittency.
