Volcano Lab using Google Earth
Tm
Name: ___________________
Date ________________________
Purpose:
To be able to describe and identify the common volcano types, tectonic setting, and geographic
location.
Steps for the Lab
1.
Open up the worksheet from the lesson.
2.
Go to Google Earth.
3.
Then click launch earth.
Questions:
1.
Navigate to Santiago, Chile, in South America
by typing in the city and country in the search bar on
the left.
Center the image so that the capital, Santiago, is in your screen at an eye altitude of ~1000 km.
This is done by using the -/+ on the bottom right of the screen and watch the numbers where it says
camera. (the names of the capitols will appear as you zoom in). Make sure that north is at the top of the
image.
a.
Tilt the image by hitting the 3D button so that you can look northward along the South
American coast. Briefly describe the major tectonic features (landforms) that you see. (5 pts)
2.
Now navigate to Volcan Descabezado Chico (-35.58, -70.75), it is best to stay in 3D mode
(you can
go directly there by typing in the coordinates in the search bar at the upper left side of the screen, make
sure to put in the negative signs or you will be at the wrong location). This puts you on the rim of the
volcano.
a.
Maximum height (elevation) of the volcano above sea level (at the rim):
___________________________ meters. (2 pts)
i.
To get the height you will need to move the mouse over the area and then look at the
number that is at the bottom far right of the screen.
b.
Describe the overall
shape of Descabezado. (5 pts)
c.
Tell what type of volcano it is, you can do an internet research for this information. (5 pts)
2
d.
Zoom out and examine the region. Describe the likely tectonic setting of the volcanoes of the
Andes Mountains (what plates are interacting). Hint: is there a deep ocean trench to the west of
the mountains? (5 pts)
3.
Navigate to Mt. St. Helens, Washington, by typing in the name in the search bar. This puts you on
the rim of the crater.
a.
Maximum height (elevation) of the volcano above sea level: ______________________ meters.
(2pts)
b.
Describe the overall shape of Mt. St. Helens. (5 pts)
c.
Zoom out to at least 365 km on the camera and examine the region. Are there any other
volcanoes nearby? Describe the likely
tectonic setting
of the volcanoes of the Cascade Range.
Support your answer with observations on the major tectonic landforms of the region. (5 pts)
d.
What type of volcano is Mt. St Helen based on size, shape, and composition? (You can use the
internet or refer to the lesson to help you.) (5 pts)
4.
Navigate to Mauna Loa on the BIG island of Hawaii (central Pacific Ocean)
(19.4715, -155.59039).
a.
Maximum height (elevation) of the volcano: ___________________________ meters. (2 pts)
b.
Describe the overall shape of Mauna Loa. (5 pts)
