NAME: __________________________________________________ Lab Section B ____ Mount Yamnuska Virtual Field Trip Objectives By the end of this lab, students should be able to: 1.
interpret a landscape in the field from the perspective of a geoscientist.
2.
determine the depositional environment that is visible on the face and suggest a modern
analogue.
3.
create detailed field notes including maps and other sketches, as appropriate.
4.
conduct a self-guided exploration of field environment.
Equipment to bring:

Laptop or tablet with Google Earth installed (see Appendix A for installation instructions)

Introduction to Physical Geology: the Science of Earth (Canadian Edition)
To begin the virtual field experience (VFE), Google Earth must be installed on your computer. For download instructions see Appendix A. Download the GLGY201VFE.kmz file from D2L to your computer. Open the .kmz file once it has been downloaded. This will automatically open the Google Earth application on your computer with the VFE found under the title “Virtual Field Experience”. It should show up in “Temporary Places Folder” in the “Places” panel. To decrease the clutter of points on Google Earth, unselect “Primary Database” from the “Layers” panel. Reselect “Borders and Labels” and “Roads” to aid with orientation on the map. If you have previous places stored in the “Places” panel, unselect those as well. The VFE includes 3 layers: (Each layer can be toggled on and off by selecting the box next to the title.) 1)
YamnuskaGigaPixel: A mosaic image of the south face of Mount Yamnuska.
2)
Region A: This layer is a higher quality mosaic of a region that will be explored in the
VFE.
3)
AGS Surface Geology: This is a large scale surface geology layer created by the Alberta
Geological Survey. This layer can be used as a reference to the local geology of the area.

The Virtual Field Experience
The purpose of this lab is to gain experience with some of the methods used in field work. Before attempting to answer the questions the study area should be explored. Double clicking the Virtual Field Experience folder will bring you to the general area. The gigapixel points indicate the location of Mount Yamnuska. Explore the region
using the imagery provided by Google Earth. You should be able to identify
the City of Calgary, Canmore, Banff and Cochrane. You should also be able to identify
nearby lakes such as Ghost Reservoir and Lake Minnewanka. Once you have oriented yourself, double click the “YamnuskaGigapixel” layer. This should orient you facing the mountain with an image in front of the Google Earth imagery. Explore the gigapixel image
and note
any interesting features. An approximate scale bar
has been provided in the lower left side of the image. To gain a full understanding of the area the image should be analyzed at multiple scales
. It is important to be aware of how small details fit in the larger scale of the mountain face. A special region of interest is marked as Region A on the main image. To view a higher resolution image of this area, select the “Region A” layer form the “Virtual Field Experience” folder.
