MINE 1100: Introduction to the Minerals Industry Assignment 4 MINE 1100: Introduction to the Minerals Industry Assignment 4: What Makes a Jurisdiction Attractive for Mineral Exploration Background Mining is a global business. Mineral deposits can be discovered in most regions of the world, and mineral exploration companies will look far-and-wide for properties that may host the next big deposit. However, some parts of the world may be less enticing for mining companies. In some locations the geology may not be prospective or political uncertainty may be too high. Before a company ventures into a new jurisdiction it needs to consider whether the region is attractive for mineral exploration. Many factors should be considered, such as geological potential and political stability. Rarely will a given country be attractive in all respects and it will be up to each exploration company to decide where it will undertake its exploration activities. Assignment A. Please review 4.3: Funding Exploration of the course website. B. Choose ONE of the following countries in the world to analyze for this assignment (Please contact the instructor if you would like to research an alternative country): Bangladesh Brazil Cyprus Ecuador Greenland Guyana Ireland Mexico Papua New Guinea Poland South Africa Uganda You can download country reports from the United States Geological Survey. Greenland also has hydropower and possibly oil and gas resources . Country The country I will be analyzing would be Greenland and would be researching on the attractiveness for exploration as well potential issues they may face. Attractive Features of Greenland Exploration With the rise of global warming Greenland attractiveness for exploration increases. As Greenland’s ice is melting and uncovering the land full of unexplored wealth. Many billionaires are looking at opportunities to step in and scoop up this opportunity. 1) Good Geological Potential (as ice is melting) 2) Access to a large land mass (with the ice melting they have a lot of area to mine) 3) Access to investment capital (lots of investors are trying to get into the green land project) Negatives 4) Good land access (they do not have good access) 5) Access to a talented workforce (as if they don’t have the equipment or gear they would need to ship) 6) Secure land tenure 2
