Michelle Davis Chapter 23 and 24 As usual, all of the matching and multiple choice should be reviewed – these will be helpful for the test and general learning the information presented. The following questions are assigned to be answered for this course. 30 points Both correctness and completeness will be used in the evaluation of your submission. Questions 1-6 are relate to concepts in Chapter 23 Questions 7-12 are relate to concepts in Chapter 24 1. Give three examples each of mechanical weathering and chemical weathering (2pts) Three examples of mechanical weathering are crystal growth, root penetration, and abrasion. Three examples of chemical weathering are dissolution, oxidation, and hydrolysis. 2. Name and describe the three components of a stream’s load (2pts) Dissolved load consists of water-soluble minerals that are carried along by a stream in solution. Suspended load is quite evident when the stream appears muddy after a heavy rain stream. Bed load coarse particles and rocks along or close to the bed of the stream constitute. 3. Distinguish among continental glaciers, cirque glaciers and valley glaciers. (2pts) Large areas of Greenland and Antarctica are presently covered with glacial ice sheets or continental glaciers. Small glaciers, called cirque glaciers, form along mountains in hollow depressions that are protected from the Sun. When snow accumulates in a valley,
the valley floor may be covered with compressed glacial ice, and a valley glacier is formed that flows down the valley. 4. Describe/define an aquifer? How common are aquifers in the United States? (2pts) A body of permeable rock that both stores and transports groundwater is called an aquifer. Sand, gravel, and loose sedimentary rock are good aquifer materials. Aquifers are found under more than half the area of the conterminous United States. 5. Describe three ways in which groundwater may become contaminated. (2pts) Groundwater may be contaminated if there is phosphates, sewage and other waste materials, and pesticides. 6. How do continental shelves differ from continental slopes? Which are the true edges of continents? (2pts) Continental shelves are gently sloping, relatively shallowly submerged areas that border continental land masses. The continental slopes define the true edges of the continental land masses. 7. Explain the difference between a cast and a mold . (1pts) A cast is a fossil formed when new mineral material fills a mold and hardens. A mold is a hollow depression formed when an embedded shell or bone is dissolved out of a rock. 8. How do index fossils aid correlation? (1pts) Index fossils are those that are widespread, numerous, easily identified, and typical of a particular limited time segment of the Earth’s history.
