Have you ever built a 3D puzzle, or sandcastle, or other 3D object (sculpture, lego tower…)? If so, what did you build? I have built a Lego tower before 2. If you drew that item on a piece of paper, how would you show that it was a 3D object? Using shadows or drawing extra lines at an angle. 3. What do you think would be the easiest way to drive a toy car across the 3D puzzle “landscape”, from left to right? Definitely avoiding the big mountains and gouing aroind them from the northern part of them. 4. The lower middle section of the 3D puzzle has “mountainous terrain” – what would this area look like in a topographic map of the puzzle? Include a description of how close the contour lines might be. The lines would be almost touching as it would showcase elevation changes intantly and show off where there are cliffs or not. Part 2: Yosemite National Park Mini Field Trip 1. What is a batholith and how does it form? It was hot magma beneath the earths surface . 2. What type of rocks have formed in the area of Yosemite being shown?  Granite, diorite 3. How did Half Dome form? It is magma which seeped out through cracks

How did the batholith in the area shown get uplifted?  Cooled 2 miles below ground and all the sediment was eroded off and exposed it and carved by glaciers. 6. What is interesting about the waterfalls around Half Dome?  It is running from the snowcapped mountains and the granite around is very durable as it hasn’t been cut by the water and been running the same for thousands of years. 7. Compare the landscape in the video with the image below of Sentinel Dome (also bordering Yosemite Valley, like Half Dome). What observations can you make about the shapes of these rock formations?  The area of it is very roundy unlike that of Yosemite valley being rugged and smooth curves as well. 8. Do you think Sentinel Dome is part of the same batholith as Half Dome? Explain your reasoning.  I would say it Is part of the same due to the exfoliation and how the landscape is round in both although there are some different rock formations that is due to how the valley has been carved by glaciers.   Part 3: Glaciation at Yosemite National Park 1. Why was John Muir's discovery of a glacier in the Sierra Nevada Mountains extremely important? It solved disagreemetns about the role glaciers play i n the shaping of Yosemite National Park’s landscape. 2. How are glaciers formed?  Glaciers are land based ice masses which are formed from snow packs. On high peaks, winter snow may not melt into the summer seasons 3. What is firn? The crystals in the snow get larger and denser, which creates a different kind of snow called “firn”. As more snow compacts on top of the firn, it turns to ice. After about 120 feet of thickness, the firn and compacted snow will start to flow under its own weight, creating a glacier.
