Rock Warmup - Image Search How is this rock described? What are some unique characteristics?  We can describe this beautiful rock as a fine-grained, clayey metamorphic rock that easily cleaves or splits into thin slabs with high tensile strength and durability. Slate is distinguished by its formation via foliation, which is the repetitive lamination of metamorphic rocks caused by shearing forces or differential pressure. Layers of rock are then formed perpendicular to the pressure of metamorphic compression. Why did you choose this rock? Well, I chose this type of stone because my husband frequently tells me that it is used to build roofs. Most of the slate mined around the world is used to make roofing slates. Slate is ideal for this application because it can be cut into thin sheets, absorbs little moisture, and withstands freezing temperatures. What is the economic importance or interesting fact about this rock?  Slate has a high economic value in the construction industry because of its ability to break into thin layers and its resistance to water. It is used as roofing tiles and flooring. Slate has a unique feature known as 'fissility'. This refers to the flat sheets that are naturally formed. In the quarry,
experts can separate these sheets from each other using a special tool that strikes parallel to the stone's foliation.
