Smith_HRMT322_Assignment 1 Bayview Heights Medical Clinic A. Top Three Policy Development Priorities: 1. Anti-discrimination policy 2. Workplace health & safety policy 3. Overtime policy B. Rationale for Policy Selections: 1. Bayview Heights’ population consists of racial and ethnic diversity, and the clinic’s staff has a prevalence of visible minorities. Therefore, it is important to have an anti-discrimination and diversity policy in place. This should prohibit discrimination, harassment and racial profiling against patients and staff based on ethnicity, race, identity, or gender. The outcome is to promote inclusivity, cultural sensitivity, and respect within the clinic. 2. This policy would be essential to the clinic, as it has a potential for exposure to hazardous waste & contagious illnesses. It’s important to outline procedures and protocol for handling of hazardous samples, infection control, and use of PPE. Part of this policy would also address inappropriate behaviour, absenteeism, managing stressful situations and prevent workplace injuries due to overworking. 3. This particular scenario highlights that staff are required to stay after scheduled work hours, to complete work they could not complete during regular work hours. Implementing an overtime policy like this would have clear guidelines for overtime work and pay, proper compensation. This would help to ensure that employees could balance their work and home life in a manner that would reduce stress, burnout, and absenteeism, while complying with legislation set out by the government. C. Applicable Employment Law/Laws: 1. Alberta Human Rights Act 2. Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS), Alberta Relations Code 3. Alberta Employment Standards
New Horizons Drilling Ltd. A. Top Three Policy Development Priorities: 1. Diversity and Inclusion Policy 2. Workplace Health and Safety Policy 3. Employment Equity Policy B. Rationale for Policy Selections: 1. As mentioned in this scenario, the oil and gas industry’s display of masculinity can hinder the recruitment of women, but enforcing a policy that promotes diversity and inclusion should increase the representation of this visible minority. This policy will ensure that the company promotes equality, respect, inclusivity, and discourage discrimination, harassment and disempowerment based on gender. Human rights legislation prohibits discrimination and harassment on protected grounds such as gender, and employers are required to accommodate the diverse employees hired. 2. In the oil & gas industry, the demanding work schedules and stress, makes the personnel at a higher risk of mental health challenges, hence creating a policy that will help ease that burden. This policy should address challenges such as stress mitigation, workload management, and safety protocols being followed. 3. In the oil & gas industry, this policy would ensure that equal opportunities would be available to all prospective employees, regardless of race, gender, age or ability. Establishing this would eliminate barriers and would help the company to pinpoint any discrepancies. Unbiased recruitment processes would attract underrepresented candidates, and providing equal opportunities to training would further developing skills. C. Applicable Employment Law/Laws: 1. Alberta Human Rights Act 2. Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS) 3. Alberta Human Rights Act, Alberta Human Rights Commission
