Guidelines for the Dairy Debate
Each week of the debate, I need you to submit this piece of paper, with the required questions answered as well
as the bullet points and research completed before class. I will set the due date to noon before class starts, but
you should turn it in sooner if you can. Please bring your computer or copy of your debate paper to class for the
class debate/discussion. You do not need to memorize your facts, however, you will not be allowed to type or
alter your document after the debate starts. Typing while people are talking is inconsiderate and part of your
grade is your ability to listen and respect your classmates. First, answer the following questions. Each answer can just be placed under the question. These answers need to be typed up and submitted with your bullet points below to show you understand the subject.
List 5 common foods that are considered dairy? Butter, cheese, milk, Ice cream, and yogurt
Give a brief history of how humans started consuming dairy? According to scientists, people from Northeast Africa were ingesting milk products beginning at least 6000 years ago. That's before humans evolved the "milk gene," suggesting we were drinking the liquid before we had the genetic tools to properly digest it.
How do we digest dairy? Does it differ with age? After eat something containing lactose, an enzyme in the small intestine called lactase breaks it down into simpler sugar forms called glucose and galactose. These simple sugars are then absorbed into the
bloodstream and turned into energy. The lactase enzyme production can decrease over time in some people, so most people can experience some degree of lactose intolerance as they get older.
What macronutrients does dairy offer? Proteins, fats and carbohydrate
What micronutrients does dairy offer? Vitamin B12, Riboflavin, Pantothenic acid, Niacin
Which type of milk is the healthiest to drink — fat-free, low fat, reduced-fat, or whole milk? Reduced Fat (2%)
Why does milk have sugar? Because lactose is a type of sugar
How is cow's milk different from milk alternatives? Cow's milk contains lactose, a naturally occurring sugar, and it is a great source of calcium, milk alternatives often contain added sugar, which is more harmful to our health.
How many servings of dairy do adults and kids need each day?
Adults should consume 3 servings of dairy products per day, while children should consume around 2 or 2.5 servings per day.
Is Greek yogurt healthier than regular yogurt?
Yes. Because has less sugar.
Can dairy foods help me lose weight?
Dairy products only are not able to make you lose weight. However some studies have shown that calcium could fat breakdown fats in cells.
What is the difference between organic vs non-organic milk? The differences are in the way the cows are fed. To be considered organic milk, the cows must be fed with certified
organic feed and are not allowed to be injected with growth hormones nor given antibiotics.
Please research the general treatment of dairy cows? Does it differ by farm? Dairy cow in the United States will spend its entire life inside a concrete-floored enclosure, and although they can live 20 years, most are sent to slaughter after four or five years when their milk production wanes. There are difference by farm. Dairy farmers breed and raise cows to produce milk. Dairy cows' diets are specialized to promote milk production, and they spend most of their time in barns.
What is the difference between cow’s milk and milk substitutes (i.e., soy milk, almond milk)?
Dairy-alternative milks tend to have fewer calories, less fat (except for coconut-based milk), more water content (for better hydration), less protein (except soy) and no lactose.
