For my creative project, I chose to create a short podcast highlighting the importance of communication in healthcare settings. I decided to do a podcast because I felt like verbal communication is imperative in healthcare. It was clear that these case studies, which emphasized the crucial role communication plays in patient outcomes and overall healthcare experiences. In this podcast, I depicted various scenarios where effective communication between healthcare providers, patients, and their families led to both positive and negative outcomes. For example, I showcased Greg’s positive recovery from his cardiac scare through his healthcare team utilizing the standard healthcare communication strategy of SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation). Another example from the case studies would be Nikki misunderstanding her doctor and would really benefit from the checkback communication strategy. Through these scenarios, I aimed to convey the critical impact of communication on patient safety, satisfaction, and overall quality of care. The insights gained from the case studies highlighted that effective communication is not only about conveying information but also about listening actively, providing emotional support, and involving patients in their care decisions. My project reflects the multifaceted nature of communication in healthcare, encompassing verbal and nonverbal cues, cultural sensitivity, and interdisciplinary collaboration. By portraying diverse communication strategies and contexts, I sought to emphasize the importance of tailoring communication approaches to individual patient needs and preferences.
My creative project served as a means to translate the insights gained from the case studies into a tangible narrative, highlighting the transformative power of effective communication in healthcare. It reinforced the notion that communication is not merely a skill but a fundamental aspect of compassionate and patient-centered care, essential for fostering trust, promoting shared decision-making, and ultimately improving health outcomes.
