Child Observation
After spending a few hours with Noah, a one-year-old child, I can say that babies are incredibly active and intellectual. In the first five minutes of being with him, he ate a bag of goldfish, three chocolate chip muffins, three fruit gummy candies, and drank a whole juice box. While eating, he walked around the classroom, watched TV, and played with toys. There were other youngsters surrounding him who he connected with by playing games like Four Corners, hot potato, and the floor is lava. He found a ball in which he kicked around, and when it struck the wall, he cried "goal." After a few minutes, he approached me and asked for a cup of water. Some physical and behavioral developments I’ve seen within Noah are gross motor skills, fine motor skills, cognitive, social-emotional behavior, and development in language. I chose these because Noah can walk, hold things with his hands, waves hello and goodbye, and much more. Noah is very good at understanding the word “no”, he knows when its time to clap to a song, and he also knows how to put a smile on your face. Noah is starting to speak by saying
words like mama, dada, no, yes, hi, bye, eat, water, etc.
He also understands when someone is speaking to him. For example, if I was to call him and tell him to pick up a toy from the floor he would immediately go ahead and pick it up and bring it towards me. 1
Noah also knows how to pronounce his big sister named grace, he also knows how to signal to someone that he wants something, whether it be a toy or even a diaper change. After reading unit 4, in the text it states, “children develop by the way they look, think, communicate, regulate their emotions, and interact with others”. Child development refers to how your child grows and changes over time. Examples of developmental milestones in a baby’s first year of life
may include Smiling, sitting without support, waving goodbye, moving objects, and transitioning
from crawling to taking steps.
“
Children at this age can typically copy other children while playing, show affection, claps when excited, shows you objects they like, and hugs stuffed toys or dolls. Also tries to say one or two words, points to ask for something, follows directions, and looks at familiar objects.” Some milestones Noah has not met yet that he should be hitting would be saying full sentences, learning the shapes and colors, and lastly knowing his letters and numbers one to ten. In my opinion Noah could reach these milestones if he practiced talking more and listened to more music which he would enjoy. So, to conclude, Noah does have a slight delay with speech and his learning abilities. However, he is still a baby and so he does have a chance to catch up and be at the milestone that he is intended to be at. 2
