Bethany, Thank you for your insight on cultural competence. I enjoyed reading your post and I liked the point you made that patients will be more inclined to following their plan of care if it coincides with their culture. This is very true and as APNs we should educate ourselves to cultural norms and beliefs so we can accommodate our patients. Building trusting relationships is very important in our field of healthcare. This article addresses the importance of cultural competency and cultural safety. “There is growing recognition of the importance of cultural competency and cultural safety at both individual health practitioner and organizational levels to achieve equitable health care” (Curtis et al., 2019). In order to improve patient relationships trust has to be established and patients’ will be more compliant to their medical regimens. “
Cultural competence seeks to achieve better care through being aware of difference, decolonising, considering power relationships, implementing reflective practice, and by allowing the patient to determine whether a clinical encounter is safe” (Curtis et al., 2019). References
