Short Paper on Hypothesis Testing
Let’s say 400 female students are on the sports varsity teams to collect a sample for this experiment it would have to be done randomly so that it will not be considered biased. I would randomly select female players by assigning each female player a number from 1 to 400. Then I would determine how large I want my sample size to be, I will choose 100 female students. I will randomly pick out 100 numbers and whoever is assigned to the numbers will be included in
the sample. The research question that can be answered is “Does the average amount of calories consumed per day equal to the recommended 2,200 calorie intake?’ The data that would need to be collected is what every female participant eats daily and counts their calories daily for an x number of days.
The null hypothesis for this data would be that the varsity sport female player’s calories equal the recommended calorie intake. The alternative hypothesis is the varsity sport female player calories are not equal to, greater than, or less than the recommended calorie intake. The
statistical notation would be “HO:
μ = 2200
Ha:
μ =, <, > 2200. Some descriptive statistics I could provide to help answer this question are the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and range of the data. For the graphs, I would use a histogram or boxplot graph to show the distribution of the daily caloric intake.
The research question for the new experiment would be “Do female varsity sports players
consume more calories daily than female students who do not play varsity sports?” The two variables that would need to be collected are whether the female plays a sport or not which is considered categorical data and their daily caloric intake which is considered quantitative data. The null hypothesis is there is no difference between the caloric intake of varsity sports females and females who do not play varsity sports. The alternative hypothesis would be that caloric intake of varsity sport female players is greater than females who do not play sports. The statistical notation would be H0: μ1 - μ2 = 0 and Ha: μ1 - μ2 > 0. The descriptive statistics I would use is the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and range of daily caloric intake for both groups. A side-by-side box plot graphs would be good to use so we can compare the different distribution of daily caloric intake from both groups.
