Personal Code of Ethics Jennifer Koerte University of Phoenix Joseph Walters Cur/525 December 11, 2023
Jennifer Koerte Code of Ethics I will embrace diversity and maintain an inclusive existence. I will treat students fairly and never use race, color, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or cultural background to exclude any student participation, grant advantages, deny benefits, or tolerate any harassment or unkind treatment of my students. I will show empathy and grace. I believe it is important to hold all people including family, colleagues, acquaintances, and students to a standard that does not demand perfection. I want to ask questions instead of creating assumptions and allow some slack and do-overs. I want to hear and observe others from a place of empathy and understanding different perspectives. I will continuously be an active learner. As an educator, I believe it is my responsibility to stay current on best teaching practices, and methods of education. The state of education and the needs of students are always changing. Actively learning will help me adapt and understand how to serve my student's needs and provide quality education. Theories That Align with My Ethics Codes I believe my code of ethics relates to many ideas of the “ethics of care” philosophy. This theory and its supporters advocate for the educational process to be one of nurturing and encouraging. This aligns with my code of ethics in acting from a place of empathy and grace. Many other ethicists and educators advocate the use of the ethic of care, students are at the center of the educational process and need to be nurtured and encouraged, a concept that likely goes against the grain of those attempting to make “achievement” the top priority. According to (Shapiro, J.
P., & Stefkovich, J. A. 2021). it became clear aspects of this ethic could be considered rational, such as providing discipline and attention to students; however, empathy and compassion toward others are also part of this paradigm and tend to demonstrate emotion. I also believe my desire to embrace diversity and my goal to provide an inclusive learning environment also fall into the “ethic of justice”. I believe strongly in advocating for social justice and celebrating diversity. According to (Shapiro, J. P., & Stefkovich, J. A. 2021) scholar Kohlberg believed providing equality of educational opportunity and allowing freedom of belief was to educate and free people. This model indicates that schools should teach people principles of justice equality, and respect. In my code of ethics not only will I respect all students regardless of race, color, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or cultural background but I will provide global education with multiple perspectives so that all my students can learn to embrace diversity. Personal and Professional Code Comparison My personal code and professional codes are almost the same. I am extremely passionate about my job as an educator, and it impacts my personal life in many ways. In my personal life, I strive to treat all people from a place of empathy and grace. I do not think that I always believed this way. I have worked hard on self-reflection and growth. I also believe in advocating for social justice in both my professional setting but also in my day-to-day personal life as well. In aspects of personal life and real life, I will challenge injustice or inappropriate conversion by interrupting it. In my classroom, this feels very natural as my job is to educate students, but in my personal life, it becomes a bit more difficult. For example, I recently heard a family member
