When a client makes the brave decision to go to treatment often or not it happens the resistance the second guess for if treatment is the right choice. A client may blame others for their problems. They may even blame an event or circumstance that is occurring in their life that they can’t continue with treatment. They will look past what really brought them into treatment and that is the own difficulties that came from themselves using drugs or alcohol. Clients must be gently told the truth until they hear it. There is a healthy side of every client—the side that is sick
of this problem and wants to recover. The truth is a very powerful tool. It is even more powerful when delivered in an atmosphere of encouragement and support. (Perkinson,2021) The more they give treatment a real try the more they will understand that addiction is a disease and like any disease it must be treated. From my own personal experience working in recovery AMA is a common thing to deal with in clients in the first week of recovery. Dealing with the detox is an overwhelming experience in the
mind of the client. It seems easier to use than to deal with pain. Some do not want to deal with the trauma whatever the case may be, having the client there as long as possible is what is in the best interest. Letting them know they have support is key both physically and mentally. References: Perkinson, Robert R. Chemical Dependency Counseling. Available from: Yuzu Reader, (6th Edition).
