If a counselor is licensed, does this make them competent as a counselor? Provide insight from the readings this week as to how a counselor can maintain their professional competency.
The DQ response must be 150-200 words and have at least one citation and one scholarly source to support your response. Cite any references accordingly using in-text citations and a reference list in APA format.
Just because a counselor is licensed does not make them competent. I believe that is true for most
professions. Just as in education, just because someone has a teaching degree and certificate, doesn’t mean they are a competent teacher. It takes more than just doing the work and passing the exams to be competent.
One way a counselor can show competency is by being a member of professional organizations such as the American Counseling Association (ACA). The ACA provides counselors with a community of other counselors, the opportunity to learn and grow, and the ability to stay up to date on current events within the profession. Another way is to become nationally certified. By becoming a National Board Certified Counselor (NBCC) demonstrates that you have fulfilled stringent national requirements for education, training, and experience, which will improve your credibility and professional reputation.
