DQ 1.2. Safety and Risk Assessment
In any treatment, including the treatment of trauma, it is important to assess for safety risk (Homicidal and suicidal ideation, intent, and plan), know when to refer for additional services, and understand when you as a provider need to refer out to another professional. How would you
assess for safety risk during your intake session and then thereafter? What may be some indicators that you need to consult or collaborate with other professionals? Find one resource in your area that may be beneficial for this purpose and share it with the class.
As we have learned, working with clients who have experienced trauma can present specific challenges. Shebib (2020) emphasizes that trauma disrupts one's sense of physical and emotional security. As we have learned, working with clients who have experienced trauma can present specific challenges. Shebib (2020) emphasizes that trauma disrupts one's sense of physical and emotional security. Keeping this in mind during the intake session, it is crucial to build rapport and create an environment where the client feels safe and comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences openly. Hays (2021) states counselors should be calm and direct while conducting the safety assessment. By asking direct questions, therapists can gather details about the client's risk level, and there is little room for ambiguity. If the client has thought about suicide, the counselor should further explore the extent and intensity of these thoughts. In subsequent sessions, I would consistently assess the client's mental state, explore the impact
of trauma in their daily life, observe changes in behavior, and identify potential risk factors. A few indicators suggesting the need for consultation or collaboration would include a lack of progress in therapy or if the client's needs surpass my scope of practice (CCPA, 2021). Another sign is a high risk of suicide. In this case, I would seek assistance from colleagues or other professionals who are proficient in crisis intervention or emergency mental health services.

???? states “ first focus of assessment in any trauma-related situation is whether the client is in imminent danger of loss of life or bodily integrity, or is at risk for hurting others” (p.64). This encompasses evaluating whether the client is currently experiencing acute suicidal tendencies.
