Child Observation Brianna Rodriguez Background Information Children’s Names: Hanna, William, third child unknown Ages: 3 Location: Dramatic play center (Kitchen) Date and time observation was completed: Feb 7 th 12:16pm Video Observation The children are playing under what seems to be a loft of some sort similar to a bunk bed, what is above is unknown. There’s not a screaming amount of different and bright colors. The toys they are playing with such as the table and pretend stove are made of wood. Everything is small to fit their size. The little girl begins by saying she’s going to wash the food and taking the pot from the teacher to wash it after he is finished. She also explains to the teacher that they have two flowers, one at the table and a bigger pot on a shelf. The little boy comes to play and the girl asks who he is. He states he is the cooker. They proceed to have a tea party and pretend to cook. The little girl is serving everyone else tea. The boys and the teacher are sitting at the table asking for more tea or saying they didn’t receive tea. Lastly, they all do a toast together. The children are saying things like; “oh sorry” “thank you” “I’ve been taking care of him because he’s still a little sick” “He’s my pretend dad” “I’m the cooker” “This is my tea cup” “I don’t have any” The children are using plastic cups and bowls and metal pots and cooking wear. They also find a wig. Some of the toys like the bowls are used as cups for the tea party because there’s not enough cups for everyone. It also looks like the little girl used a pot as a serving dish in the very beginning. The children don’t seem to know what to do with the wing so they copy the teacher and put it over the pot. The teacher is asking them questions like; “is he better now?” ‘’Do you wash the dishes?” “What’s special about those?” “What does the doctor do?” He also tells them what stuff is. Non verbal communication the children expressed or showed was eye contact. They looked at the teacher in the eyes many times while talking to him or when he was talking to them. One of little boys smiles at the teacher and nods his head when he says he’s drinking out of the bowl.
Milestone Analysis Developmental Domain Milestones Observed Evidence/Examples Social-Emotional Copies adults and friends Shows affection for friends without prompting At 2:07 the teacher places the wig over the pot, at 2:48 the girl also places the wig on the pot. At 5:05 she states “let me give you some tea everybody” after giving everyone cups. Language/Communication Says words like “I” “me” “we” and “you” Can name most familiar things In the beginning of the video (0:02) she says “want me to wash the food for you?” The little girl can name the cooking toys like tea cups and dishes and food but she can also name stuff like plants. Movement/physical Climbs onto and down from furniture Runs easily At 3:30 the girl tells her friend to come out and he comes out of what seems to be little bed inside of a tent or hut The little boy can be seen running away at 2:28 Cognitive Plays mom and dad Understands the idea of counting She says the other little boy is her pretend dad (0:44) She counts the teacups to make sure she has enough (3:55) Reflection The most valuable thing from this observation was being able to watch how multiple kids show different milestones at the same time and play at different paces. I learned that one thing can be split up to different milestones like running: at age 2 they are beginning to run and at age 3 they should be running easily. This assignment definitely helps in knowing what to look for in the classroom and communicating it to parents. I would definitely try to educate and spread information to parents so they can keep an eye on these things too. I know this assignment relates to standard 3 of the NAEYC because we were observing the children and watching how they worked and met milestones.
