Complete the following: Reaction Paper 1 Name: Jenae Lewis I tem R esponse Title of Video S eeing UDL in Action in the Classroom Date Posted J une 9, 2021 Source Neurodiversity Resource Center Define neurodiversity (cite source). Neurodivergent is a nonmedical term that describes people whose brains develop or work differently for some reason. my.clevelandclinic.org Neurodiversity includes a spectrum of several conditions. List three. - Dyslexia - ADHD - Autism Summary (in your own words; five to six complete sentences) Seeing UDL in Action in the Classroom is about… Who is featured? (in your own words; five to six complete sentences) Those featured include Eric Crouch a…who… Eric Crouch, a 5th grade teacher, struggled with academic success and recalls being pulled aside in kindergarten. He struggled to complete tasks in the same environment as others. He didn’t have the support to achieve success. The story highlights the challenges faced by Crouch in school. He believes that a classroom that utilized universal design for learning would have benefited him. Eric commented that it was interesting “to see how well kids learned their learning.” Why did he say it was “really complicated” and at the same time “really simple?” Explain in five to six complete sentences. Eric describes learning as "really complicated but simple," as kids base their understanding of the material on how they feel in the classroom and how it supports their learning. Eric continues by demonstrating their thought process with the seating arrangements. Since they can select the seat of their choice, students are becoming more and more interested in how they are seated. Their working relationships and the people they sit next to are impacted by this dynamic. When doing math and writing, some kids move to a seat far enough in back for privacy or during math move closer to the board. In your own words (five to six complete sentences) react to the documentary’s content and explain how you felt about it . I like the idea of a Universal Design of Learning because it gives students control over their own learning. As a teacher, you must understand that the best way to teach students real life is to give them the materials they need to learn, but to also step back and let them do it on their own. The analogy that Eric used about working out, doing all the work as a trainer and then the students do the lighter set. The students doing the lighter set won’t benefit them in the future because they didn’t push themselves to understand and try harder in the situation. I feel like the video made me realize that nowadays teachers smother the students too much causing them to fell behind, but if we had a UDL in the classroom it forces the teachers to let go of their students’ hands. T otal 30 (plus 5 pts. grammar/punctuation)
