Medical Emergency #1 Case Scenario: You are at dinner with a group of friends and notice an adult female (mid-thirties) a few tables over coughing and pushing her chair back from the table. She is starting to become red in the face and is making dismissive hand gestures to her dinner guest as if to suggest that she does not need assistance. After a few seconds she suddenly rises from the table and walks to the bathroom alone. What do you do next?? Develop a treatment plan and presentation (15 min in length) educating your fellow students what steps should be taken in this situation. The presentation should include the following types of information: What should be done to assist this person who is refusing help Education regarding choking (statistics, etiology, identification, etc) Management of a patient who is choking but able to cough Management of a conscious choking victim who is unable to cough, breathe, or talk Management of choking victim who becomes unconscious Education regarding management of choking for a person who is alone (not in a public place) Any other information you determine is crucial for your fellow student pharmacists to provide care to choking victims REMEMBER: Be creative!! Medical Emergency #5 Case Scenario While visiting your relatives at their home in Florida. You notice that your uncle is doing some work on his computer out by the pool. Your 4-year-old cousin is running around outside of the pool and generally is acting like a Wildman. Your uncle’s cellphone rings, the he becomes distracted. He goes back into the house to gather some papers needed for the phone call leaving the boy alone. You assume since they live in Florida and has a pool in the back yard everyone must know how to swim. A few minutes later you hear a yell and a splash. Your cousin has tripped over a pool float and went flying into the deep end of the pool. You run out to see what has happened and realize that the child cannot swim and may in fact be hurt. By the time you reach him he is struggling and going down. You pull him out of the pool and see that he is unconscious. What do you do next??
