1. In general, what is a competition plan? A Competition Plan refers to those things that an athlete can do, say, think about, concentrate on,
and attend to on the day of, just before, and during the competition that will maximize the chances of the individual performing up to their potential. 2. In a sentence each, list and describe the purse and the timeframe of each of the five components typically included in a complete competition plan.
A Game Day Plan(from the time of awakening up to approximately an hour before the competition) to ensure that the athlete has a restful, stress-free day before competing.
A Pre-Competition Plan for the last hour or so before the competition to minimize distractions and maximize an athlete's mental readiness to perform.
A Competition Focusing Plan to ensure that, once a competition begins, the athlete will experience the covert and overt behaviours associated with optimal performance(often described as maintaining confidence and concentration and being mentally tough)
A Refocusing Plan for dealing with uncontrollable distractors that might be countered.
AStructured Post-Competition Evaluation Strategy for reviewing and refining the plans. 3. A game-day plan should enable an athlete to answer "yes" to what six questions?
Does it include a wake-up routine to start the day in a good mood and a positive frame of mind?
Does it ensure that the athlete will eat proper foods and that the last meal will occur at least 2 hours before the beginning of the competition?
Does it ensure that the athlete will consume ample fluids?
Does it maximize the likelihood that the athlete will enjoy the experience of preparing to compete?
Does it include an equipment and clothing check before leaving for the competition site?
Does it identify the appropriate times for leaving for, traveling to, and arriving at the competition site? 4. What six outcomes should a well-designed pre-competition plan ensure in terms of athletic readiness to perform? Let's assume the athlete arrives at the competition site, and there is about 1 hour until the competition begins.
Is approximately warmed up and energized.
Is reasonably free of excessive nervousness or anxiety.
Maintains positive self-talk
Focuses on realistic performance standards or execution goals.
Mentally rehearses previous successful performances
Is ready to attend to task-relevant cues when the competition begins. Each of these strategies assumes that the athlete is familiar with many techniques such as goal setting, positive self-talk, and emotion-control techniques. 5. List three strategies that can be followed to help athletes to develop pre-competition plans.
Provide a Best/Worst Competition Questionnaire for an Athlete
Provide a Detailed Pre-Competition Guide with Write-in Options
Provide a Questionnaire to Identify the Athlete's Current Mental Preparation Activities and Areas in Need of Improvement 6. After a pre-competition plan has been prepared, what are five of the nine questions to which an athlete should be able to answer "yes"?
Does it identify the appropriate times for performing warm-up and stretching activities, changing into the competition uniform, completing the mental rehearsal or performance routines, meeting with the coach, etc.?
Does it include specific positive self-talk and other strategies to help the athlete maintain confidence?
Does it keep the athlete away from individuals (relatives, friends, press) who are not familiar with mental preparation procedures, especially during the last hour or so before the competition?
Does it include steps to minimize distractions, including interactions with other performers, especially during the last hour before competing?
Does it include performance enhancement imagery at the competition site? 7. What period is covered by a competition focus plan? Describe an example of a sport. A competition focus plan covers the period from the beginning to the end of the competition. Example: In a game like hockey, this would refer to the duration starting from when the puck is initially dropped at the beginning of the first period until the final buzzer sounds after the third period. 8. What is the general goal of a competition-focusing plan? The general goal of a competition-focusing plan is to ensure that, once a competition begins, the athlete will experience the covert and overt behaviours that characterize the optimal performance. 9. Briefly discuss the demands of two different sports to illustrate how the nature of competition focusing plan varies from sport to sport.
Soccer For controlled kicks in soccer, an effective pre-kick focusing plan can include Deep center breathing, an external focus on the scoring zone, Key words for executing the kick.
Ballet For a Ballet competition focusing plan should include Sufficient thought content to
consume the time of the entire dance routine. That would include; Keywords or technique
thoughts for specific jumps and dance moves, Self-talk between elements that might
