2 Academic Integrity Academic integrity has value to our university community. All institutions must uphold academic integrity. It is crucial that, as students, we should take responsibility for academic integrity. If we do not sustain academic integrity, we are not learning or being truthful in our educational program. Academic integrity is having respect, being honest, not plagiarizing, making good decisions, and behaving appropriately in the classroom. I have dealt with academic dishonesty with a classmate. When my classmate asked for guidance on an essay, I gave examples and showed my piece for help—my classmate then cheated and stole my work. When my classmate handed in her plagiarized paper to our professor at the time, I was not aware of it. Later on, the professor asked both of us to stay after the class had ended. He then asked why there were the same ideas and information in our papers. Therefore, I was honest and let the professor know that I did share examples and show my paper to my classmate, but I was not made aware my words and ideas were being imitated. My classmate was honest and admitted to stealing my work. The Institution resulted in failing my classmate and giving a violation to the individual from the college. Plagiarizing is never acceptable; that is why it is so essential for institutions to uphold their integrity. It is essential for schools to uphold academic integrity because students must be working at their fullest potential to learn course objectives. Institutions have a policy handbook that explains to students what will happen if they do not follow academic rules. If schools are not strict about their plagiarism violations, students will do a disservice to themselves by not learning and working hard on their own.
