How could an increased awareness of information processing, your learning preferences (versus a specific style), and your attention and self-regulation strategies potentially affect your performance in your academic journey?
An increased awareness of information processing, learning preferences, and self-regulation strategies can affect performance in a positive way. When learners are able to understand their learning preferences and self-regulation, this allows the learner to accommodate what works for them. For example, a person who knows that sitting in a quiet area versus a noisy area when studying helps them retain the information being studied. In the text, Theories of Learning: An Exploration,” Rosser-Majors (2017) describes how a person who evaluates their learning uses metacognition. Metacognition goes well with this because as you become aware of how you process information, your learning preferences, and self-regulation, you can evaluate the process of how you did and what you can change to improve.
How will an increased awareness of information processing, your learning your learning preferences (versus a specific style), and your attention to self-regulation strategies impact your career development?
An increased awareness of information processing, learning preferences, and attention to self-regulation can impact your career development positively. When you are self-aware of how you process information, you can speed up the learning process by adjusting to what suits your learning needs. The faster you learn and comprehend new tasks in your career, the faster you can add to the plethora of information required of you to do your job and become an expert. Your peers and leadership come to you for help because you have become an expert in your job, making you a valuable employee in the company.
When considering your career goals, how might you apply your increased understanding of how we learn? (In your organization? Your community? Your volunteer efforts?)
My career goal is to become a mental health counselor. An increased understanding of how we learn is critical to the mental health career field. To do my job well, I must effectively teach coping strategies to my future patients. I can apply my increased understanding of how we learn by acknowledging that not every person has the same learning style, which is crucial for teaching coping mechanisms.
This applies to all aspects of my life, including my volunteer efforts, community, and my current job. When I volunteer for different organizations, sometimes I am the leader and must ensure that the people working under me understand the mission. I must be attentive and able to pick up on cues of
confusion. This applies in the military as well. In the military, we are required to bring our wingmen with us, so learning is essential and constant.
Did you learn anything important about yourself through the process of learning about learning?
Throughout the process of learning about learning, I learned that everyone learns different information based on what they find important to them. I did not realize that everyone is retaining different information, although we may receive the same information. It was an aha moment for me when I conversed with people and they mentioned something I completely missed. I also learned that I create a relaxing, quiet environment for myself to retain and acquire information. If there are too many distractions or noises, I get distracted and start thinking about other things that have nothing to do with what I am learning. Lastly, I learned that evaluating how I learned and how I can improve my learning is my metacognitive skills. I have been doing this throughout my learning journey and never realized this was a skill.
What did you learn about your peers in the class through the process of learning about learning?
Throughout the course, I learned that my peers have had similar experiences with their learning. I read one post where a student stated that she prefers to have background noises to keep her focused on the task, while I prefer quiet to keep me focused on the task. Although our preferences are different, we both understand what we need to succeed in our learning.
How will you apply what you have learned about yourself in your future learning activities (whether you are the learner or the instructor in these activities)?
Since I have been in my military career, I have had lots of opportunities to teach. During the times that I noticed students struggling, I did not understand why they were struggling; however, after taking this course, I have an idea of why some of those students struggled. One reason could be needing help understanding what works best for them to process information and, for some, a limited working memory capacity. In the future, I can be more cognizant of these possible reasons.
Do you agree or disagree that by applying the elements of metacognition to your studies, you will improve your ability to learn more effectively?
