Module 2 Chapter 1 Discussion
There are six perspectives that provide definitions for human services. The perspectives include the themes and purposes for human services, the interdisciplinary nature of human services, the helping relationship, management principles, professional roles, and professional activities (Woodside, McClam, 2015).
Baby Anne’s specific needs include food, housing, developmental opportunities, and appropriate supervision (Woodside, McClam, 2015).
Almeada’s specific needs include assistance with childcare, parenting skills support, assistance with work skills and health, assistance with continuing education, she also needs money for her and baby Anne as well as safety, housing, and food (Woodside, McClam, 2015).
These problems compound Almeada and baby Anne’s situation because their safety, health and mental well-being are at risk. With little skills and education, Almeada works a job with long hours and little pay. She doesn't have a support system to help her and her child. She's a young mother who is working long hours, so finding the time to get assistance must seem insurmountable. Economic self-sufficiency is a difficult goal for Almeada because she is in a stressful situation and doesn’t have support. She’s young and has a child to take care of and very independent, so she initially declined assistance. Her parents are the only family she has but when she relied on them for help, they took advantage of her, and she felt her baby wasn’t safe around them. She didn’t finish school and must work to support herself and her child, but she has few skills, and the job she was able to get requires her to work long hours with little pay.
